Brent McKinney, a 45-year-old black man, was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, on the connector ramp between the eastbound Interstate 10 and the northbound Interstate 5 at South Boyle Avenue in Boyle Heights. The officers had faced off with the man at a homeless encampment under the freeway, where he had threatened them with a machete, CHP officials said. The man and the officers moved to the ramp, where both officers shot him.

The victim had a machete, and the two officers had guns. Who was in control? Did they really have to shoot him? (rhetorical question)

Robert,
Yes they did. I want and expect my husband to come home to me every night. So yes it was necessary, you see each of us must take responsiblity for your own actions.

Who was in control? That is a rhetorical question, and a stupid one. The one with the machete was in control of his own fate. If you threaten anyone with a deadly weapon, the threatened person may result to the appropriate level of force to protect him or herself. And yes, the officers did go home to their family that night becuase they did shoot. The machete wielder did not have to die, it was his choice.
