Wilbert Mahone, 18

May 22, 2007 |  2:24 pm

Mahone_wilbert_jamaal Wilbert Jamaal Mahone, 18, a black youth, was shot in the side at 3740 E. Pauline St. in Compton and died at 7:56 p.m. Monday, May 14.

Jamaal to his family, he had come to Los Angeles from Georgia to look for work, and was at the home of a family member when drive-by shooters came down the street, and shot him. He made it inside the house, and died there, holding the hand of his 16-year-old brother. He was one of seven children of a Boeing line supervisor and his wife, Wilbert and Yolanda Mahone. The couple had moved their family to Georgia from Compton four years ago because, "we had sons and we didn't want them to be killed," said Yolanda Mahone. But hunger for jobs had drawn the sons back to their old neighborhood, with its old associations. Wilbert Mahone had applied for a job as a union laborer job here in Southern California, and was waiting to hear whether he got it, which he did, after his death.

Update: Two suspects have been arrested.
