On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.
Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.
Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.
If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

One homicide victim to report in Orange County last week:
Nicole L. Villarreal, 27
Nicole L. Villarreal, a 27-year-old Latina from Buena Park, died Saturday, Feb. 17, from a gunshot wound to the head, police said. She had been on life support at a hospital since Feb. 8, when she was shot late at night at a friend's house in the 4000 block of Salacia Drive in Lake Forest. Her infant child had been playing nearby. Anton Kareem Naimat, a 20-year-old man whom detectives said she had met three weeks before, was arrested on suspicion of her murder. Naimat's father, Tassawur, 55, was arrested on suspicion of aiding and abetting his son's escape from the house.
While it's laudable to describe apparent race and ethnicity, would it not be more complete to offer pictures of suspects or witnesses whom the police want to question? The Homicide Report offers a few pictures here and there but not as a regular practice. The goal should be to prevent and solve crimes as opposed to tersting our social theories. Also, there is the factor of witness intimidation. Where such news can be found, it should be included. We all have a duty to aid law enforcement.
