Beyond the mall: Pop-ups, craft fairs and other holiday shopping

Looking to shop someplace a bit different this year? Here's a sampling of pop-up shops, holiday sidewalk sales, major craft festivals and other events for your shopping pleasure.

Ongoing: Handmade ceramics, hand-painted scarves, jewelry and more work by local artists are at the Space art center. Ends Dec. 24. 1506 Mission St., South Pasadena. (626) 441-4788.

Ongoing: The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens hosts holiday trunk shows every weekend until Christmas. Selection includes ceramics, herbal bath and skin care products, jewelry, art books and children's games. 1151 Oxford Road, San Marino. Parking and admission to shopping are free. (626) 405-2100.

Nov. 30: Artspace Warehouse, Modernica, Gibson (shown above), Bourgeois Boheme, Blend Interiors, Mosaik, Rummage, Espionage and other stores along the 7000 block of Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles host an evening of shopping specials, gift wrapping and refreshments during Beverly Boulevard Night Out. 5 to 8 p.m. (323) 934-4248.

Dec. 1: West Elm hosts an Etsy craft event from 6 to 9 p.m. Customers can create Christmas ornaments for trees that will be donated to local charities. Five local Etsy vendors sell their crafts. 8366 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles; (323) 782-9672. Also, 1433 4th St., Santa Monica; (310) 576-7270.

Dec. 2-4: More than 100 dealers at the Sherman Oaks Antique Mall offer wine, cheese, door prizes and discounts up to 50% off at the 24th annual  Holiday Open House. 14034 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks. (818) 906-0338.

Dec. 3: The Craft and Folk Art Museum hosts a global bazaar featuring handmade and fair trade goods. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free. The museum store has extended shopping hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Dec 7 to 9. 5814 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles (323) 937-4230.

 

 Dec. 3: The Los Feliz Village Holiday Festival includes complimentary trolley to transport shoppers through Hillhurst and Vermont avenues and Hollywood Boulevard. Carolers, puppeteers and Santa. 6 to 10 p.m. Sponsored by the Los Feliz Village Business Improvement District and village merchants and restaurants. Free.

Dec. 3: A French-inspired artist and vintage market held the first Saturday of each month, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., to benefit Hollywood High School. The event is held in the school parking lot. The market organizers pay rent for the space, plus give 50 cents of each $2 admission to the school, at Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue.

Dec. 3-4: Mexican fine art and folk art including Mata Ortiz pottery, Oaxacan wood carvings and Zapotec Indian rugs are featured at this holiday event. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 3; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 4. Melrose  Lightspace Studio, 7600 Melrose Ave., Suite N, Los Angeles. (323) 651-3893. 

BauerDec. 3-4: The fourth annual Unique L.A. holiday craft show features more than 300 vendors of handmade art, stationery, home accessories, jewelry and clothes. The event includes DIY workshops. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. $10.  California Market Center, 110 E. 9th St., Los Angeles.

Dec. 4: Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden's Winter Holiday Open House features gifts, gift wrapping, live music, crafts and a visit with Santa. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free. 1500 N. College Ave., Claremont. (909) 625-8767.

Dec. 10: The Pelican Courtyard Flea Market for new and vintage finds takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. Free. 124 Tustin Ave., Newport Beach.

RenegadeDec. 10-11: More than 200 vendors sell handmade wares at the second annual Renegade Craft Fair Holiday Market, right. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free. Los Angeles State Historic Park, 1245 N. Spring St., Los Angeles.

Dec. 10-11: Descanso Gardens volunteers sell handmade items at the Holiday Craft Boutique. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Included in regular gardens admission of $3 to $8. 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. (818) 949-4200.

Dec. 11: The Rose Bowl Flea Market and Market Place holds its last event before Christmas. Regular admission runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and costs $8. Express admission starts at 8 a.m. and costs $10. Early admission starts at 7 a.m. and costs $15. VIP admission starts at 5 a.m. and costs $20. Dec. 18: Long Beach Antique Mart stages its last sale before Christmas. Hundreds of vendors. Regular admission runs from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $5. Early admission starts at 5:30 a.m. and costs $10. Long Beach Veterans Stadium, 4901 E. Conant St., Long Beach.
