A pair of swings and a lucite chair by noted designer Charles Hollis Jones may not seem all that compatible, but at the new Community & Co., they coexist effortlessly in a showroom that does not take itself too seriously.

Walk through the 13-foot-tall bright green doors and you will encounter a fun mix of vintage furnishings, new pieces by Fenix (such as the elegant chaise above), pillows by New York design studio Eskayel, fireplaces by Modfire (a hit at this year’s Dwell on Design exhibition) and artworks by Holly Moe, Thomas Pathe and Aubrienne Roche.

Following a 14-year stint as an interior designer, owner Jennifer Ridel said she wanted to created a showroom that represents real people who live in an eclectic environment.

“You learn so much as a designer,” Ridel said. One common design complaint she heard from clients? ‘It’s not livable.’

‘My favorite chair is from the Salvation Army,’ she said. ‘I recovered it in metallic leather.’

The clean-lined furniture is handmade in Southern California. The loft-like showroom in which it’s displayed will be a venue for monthly social events: The First Friday Happy Hour series kicks off this week with 20% discounts on furnishings and accessories from 5 to 7 p.m.
