A Hollywood Hills home designed by architect Steven Kent is our latest installment of Pro Portfolio, which looks at a recently built, remodeled or redecorated home with commentary from the designer. The home will be included in the American Insitute of Architects Los Angeles chapter’s fall home tour this month.

Project: Design a new home that connects to the outdoors and neighboring canyons.

Location: Nichols Canyon.

Designer: Steven Kent Architects. Contractor: Crane & Co. Structural engineer: Satish Shah Engineers, (714) 632-1865.

Designer’s description: The Nichols Canyon house is centered on the pool and expansive views of the surrounding canyon. In order to qualify as a remodel for permitting purposes, the house follows much of the previous structure’s footprint.

The house has an open plan with all spaces connecting to a voluminous two-story, glass-enclosed great room. Large sliding glass doors open to an outdoor lounge with pool and spa overlooking the canyon. A floating steel stair structure leads to the loft-like second level. Large walls showcase the brilliant photography and art collection and are washed with an abundance of natural light. Materials include exposed structural steel and steel cladding, smooth stucco, gray maple floors, slate, granite and wenge cabinetry.
