Where do we wish we could be this Labor Day weekend? After seeing designer Velvet Hammerschmidt’s rooftop oasis, Santa Monica seems like a answer. What had been an industrial-looking slanted rooftop is now an alfresco living room -- and kitchen, and dining room, and playroom, and garden.

The designer and her husband, Mark Friedman, pictured below with daughters Brooke and Jade, crafted a 60-foot-long retreat that includes ipe wood decking, a patch of artificial turf and a sun-shaded lounge set around a fire pit.
