Drought-tolerant garden workshops, plant sales for inland residents
Four Inland Empire water districts have partnered with Home Depot to create the Garden Friendly program. The educational campaign is aimed at the blazing inland region, where irrigation of a conventional turf garden can command as much as 70% of household water use.
Workshops and special plant sales on Home Depot parking lots are scheduled from April 9 to June 25. Locations include Riverside, Chino, Upland, Corona, Redlands and Murrieta. Although many dry gardeners would like see major chains stock more drought-tolerant plants as a rule instead of an exception, this effort is worth saluting.
The Dry Garden, our column on sustainable landscapes, will revisit this program when a new water-wise demonstration garden opens at Cal State San Bernardino in June.
