Times Past: Doing our part to recycle

January 24, 2011 |  6:30 am

From the Los Angeles Times archives: West magazine, Feb. 20, 1972

Times-Past-Recycling-PurseAn inspired West magazine cover — the recycling issue — had Angelenos pegged: environmentalist car-lovers with a sense of whimsy.

Inside were other amusing recycling ideas, including a refrigerator-turned armoire and cigarette packs made into a purse, left.

But farther inside was something less forward-looking: an article with an executive of the Glass Container Manufacturers' Institute insisting that customers "want, need and demand the convenience of the nonreturnable container."
