It’s time to add another pop-up shop to the list: R&G Collective looks less like a temporary home store and more like a long-established, treasure-filled souk. Located on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, the shop is owned by Wendy Riva and Andrea Gibbin, an interior design team who traveled throughout the Middle East and decided to open a retail outpost with their finds.

Add an economy where commercial land owners are eager to strike short-term leases, and you’ve got a pop-up bazaar loaded with suzani throws, leather poufs and pearl-inlaid tables and dressers from Damascus, Syria. Prices run the gamut: Moroccan tea glasses for $7 each, colorful Ikat pillows starting at $125 and Egyptian lighting for $425 and up.

To the import mix, Riva and Gibbin have added neutral-toned upholstered chairs and sofas of their own design, as well as rugs, artwork from the Sears-Peyton Gallery and even clothes by fashion designer Minnie Mortimer.

Riva and Gibbin also worked with L.A. designer Nathan Turner and N.Y. designer Eric Hughes. Turner, who owns a home store in West Hollywood, has brought Italian and Middle Eastern pieces west of the 405 to R&G Collective. Hughes collaborated on an intimate space with burlap-covered walls and low seating loaded with throw pillows.

‘They were able to make it look like so much of this has been here forever,’ Gibbin said. ‘I think this is really how retail is going now -- as a team effort. It’s hard to get space, it’s hard to get stuff, but if you join together, you can make it work.’

Temporarily, at least. The store will close at the end of this month.
