Philippe Starck may have snagged the name Ghost for his plastic versions of 18th century French chairs, but it would easily suit the Phantom armchair from Domitalia.

The Milanese design team of Andrea Radice and Folco Orlandini created the Phantom. In white, the chair looks like it has tossed on a bed sheet to go trick-or-treating.

In colors, it delivers a clever fusion of casual and formal lines. Made from molded polyethylene (the durable stuff for outdoors), the chair has modern arms and a back that contrasts with the soft folds forming the base. It resembles a 1960s dinette chair wearing a full skirt.

I saw the Phantom at the Dwell on Design show this summer. Verdict: Cool to behold, comfortable to be seated. I’d certainly use it on the patio, and it would look sharp and surprising snuggled up to a classic Saarinen dining table.

The price is a little scary: $655, along the lines of what you might see from Italian design firms such as Moroso and Driade. It’s available at all three Interior Illusions showrooms, the exclusive dealers in the greater Los Angeles area.
