Pisgah Village earns preservation award

Women Organizing Resources, Knowledge & Services, a Los Angeles nonprofit housing developer known as WORKS, has received a design award from the California Preservation Foundation for Pisgah Village, a development in Highland Park for low-income senior citizens.

Pisgah Village sits on the site of a mission that was founded more than a century ago and that by 2002 had fallen into disrepair. The developers rehabilitated the historic buildings and added five new ones to make 47 homes for seniors. The architect was Ena Dubnoff Architects.

It’s a community that focuses on food too, with gardens, a farmers market, community dinners and cooking classes all available to the residents.

Pisgah Village has received several other awards, including one from the Los Angeles Conservancy. The California Preservation Foundation’s preservation design awards are to be presented in October; other winners include the Annenberg Community Beach House in Santa Monica, the Schindler House in West Hollywood, Tahoe Fish Hatchery in Tahoe City and the Richmond Memorial Civic Center.
