The story behind Malibu Biodynamic Compost

The Times’ Martha Groves has a front page story today about Denise Ritchie, the woman behind Malibu Compost, a company that makes a very high-end, biodynamic compost. Ritchie is a former screenwriter turned landscaper, composter and cow rescuer. It’s been quite a journey, and you can read all about it in Groves’ piece here.

As for the compost, it sells for $16.99 a bag at Cosentino’s Nursery in Malibu. When I called to confirm the price, a helpful store clerk added that I could purchase the non-biodynamic Gardener’s Organic Compost for a mere $5 a bag. The price might be better (read: reasonable), but that one probably won’t have the chamomile, stinging nettles and yarrow that give Malibu Compost its magical edge.
