Plastica is renovating its store on West Third Street and 86-ing its unique shelving systems that were designed and built locally by 100xbetter. The downtown Los Angeles firm was featured in a 2007 article I wrote focusing on furniture made using digital technology.

Made from plywood, the pieces are called Slip-Slot shelves because the wood pieces slide together to form cubbies in various rectangular sizes. When they are attached with 100xbetter’s specially designed mounting pieces, they float on the wall without ugly, visually distracting brackets. They look like a Mondrian composition viewed with 3-D glasses.

Plastica is selling five models that originally cost in the thousands. Prices start as low as $150 for a 10- by 3-foot unit with 5.5-inch deep shelves. The unit shown here, nearly 13 feet long and 5.5 feet high with 12-inch deep shelves, is priced at $550.

All pieces have been used as shop fixtures and, according to owner Carla Decker, have ‘minor wear and tear.’ They are final sales in as-is condition. (At these prices, what’s a little refinishing or painting?)
