Event: Case Study 21 open house showcases new Korean art

The Bailey House, also known as Pierre Koenig’s Case Study House 21, which in December 2006 was sold at auction for $3,185,600, will be open to the public from April 15 to 18. It’s a rare opportunity for important-architecture addicts to get a fix of the Modernist landmark, above, which will be used as a pop-up gallery showcasing the work of Asian artists represented by the One and J. gallery based in Seoul.
A preview brochure for the show included photography and installation pieces as well as ceramic furniture by Hun-chung Lee. Suyoung Kim’s paintings of high rise apartments and offices looked like a particularly good fit for Koenig’s minimalist 1958 design.
The most intriguing piece was ‘Splash and Flake (Pipeline),’ right, by Teppei Kaneuji. The artist uses natural materials such as driftwood and common household products including plastic plumbing supplies to construct sculptures that made me smile. (And wonder what I could do with all those leftover parts I have in the toolbox.)
The show will be open from noon to 4 p.m. on April 15 to 18 at the Bailey House, 9038 Wonderland Park Ave. in Beverly Crest. Due to the size of the house, attendees must RSVP in advance to Hope Erikson at (310) 525-0515.
