Fresh snow in the mountains made me think of this modern cabin in Crowley Lake, on the way to Mammoth. Writer David Hay brought us this story a couple of years ago, and the design challenges will still sound familiar to anyone seeking peace and quiet anywhere. Writes Hay:

Conceived as a series of carefully stacked boxes sheathed in glass, cement board and corrugated metal that will rust over time, the house is a constructivist homage to the craggy peaks of Mammoth -- and a departure from the traditional wood cabins that have defined residential architecture here for so long. Perhaps more important, the design affords its owner the illusion of solitude, capturing mountain views while shielding him from neighbors -- no small feat in a resort region that continues to grow more dense.
