Sneak peek: Inside Rolling Greens’ new L.A. store

Rolling Greens, the rambling Culver City nursery, will hold a media preview of its new Los Angeles store tonight but was kind enough to give the Times a sneak peek on Wednesday. The new space, less plant emporium and more lifestyle destination, is stocked with books, packaged foods, dinnerware, cut flowers and a bed and bath boutique. As owner Greg Salmeri says, it’s “a little greener, a little hipper and less high-end” than the original nursery.

But never fear, the popular make-your-own plant arrangement bar is still there. So are the orchids and begonias, real and fake. (Much to my surprise, Salmeri says the artificial orchids are among the store’s biggest sellers). The Beverly Boulevard site also has a greenhouse and a variety of planters and distinctive ceramic pots.

Situated in what had been the Town Tire Co., the new Rolling Greens is gorgeous: sandblasted brick walls, rustic repurposed windows, a concrete floor and a surplus of natural light. The store also features some of the coolest lighting fixtures I’ve seen in a while. Some are for sale.

One place to linger is by the kitchen offerings, which include Algabar tea, McEvoy Ranch olive oils and prepared foods, Bauer Pottery and cookbooks.

Even if you’re just in the mood to browse, Rolling Greens Hollywood is a lovely place to find inspiration. The store opens Dec. 15 at 7505 Beverly Blvd. (at Gardener Street). (323) 934-4500.
