Shopping alfresco along Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice is a relaxing mall-alternative. There are no stifling parking garages, coffee is readily available, and there is a surfeit of unexpected, affordable gift items. Granted, there are some high-end showrooms here, but this week I also spotted some garden-related gifts that won’t break the bank.

At the colorful and cozy Grow Nursery, which opened in July, owner Jami Burrows was busy assembling holiday gift orchids at her outdoor arrangement bar. Her biggest seller this holiday season has been a tiny living Christmas tree, which comes in a wooden box with pebbles and moss. The item runs around $75 and the box can be reused for another arrangement after the holidays. Burrows says she has tried to focus on “modestly priced” gifts this year and she wasn’t lying. A simple $6 cactus arrangement she created, boxed and prettily wrapped, was ready and awaiting pickup.

Right across the street sits the Juicy Leaf (pictured above), which also offered some great holiday specials. A tiny Haworthia cactus in a glass container floating above contrasting pebbles, normally $24.95 is now only $19.95 and a similar Sansevieria arrangement, normally $29 is now $24.95. Custom arrangements for any price can be made at both stores. For more on the Juicy Leaf, click here.
