It's hard to imagine Surfing Cowboys anywhere but Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, not far from the ocean. The store has an eclectic mix of collectibles, including midcentury modern Surfingcowboys_2077_330026878furniture and vintage water skis and surfboards. The owners, Wayne and Donna Gunther, seem to understand what many Californians aspire to achieve: elegance in flips-flops.

The store’s sale, held once a year, features items that lend themselves to that kind of casual, indoor-outdoor living, including a Paul McCobb coffee table (pictured at right, reduced from $650 to $550), a vintage garden lounger (reduced from $600 to $400) and a clay tile of a schooner by California ceramist Brent Bennett (reduced from $550 to $350). Surfing Cowboys is at 1624 Abbot Kinney Blvd.; (310) 450-4891.
