It’s hard to imagine Surfing Cowboys anywhere but Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, not far from the ocean. The store has an eclectic mix of collectibles, including midcentury modern furniture and vintage water skis and surfboards. The owners, Wayne and Donna Gunther, seem to understand what many Californians aspire to achieve: elegance in flips-flops.

The store’s sale, held once a year, features items that lend themselves to that kind of casual, indoor-outdoor living, including a Paul McCobb coffee table (pictured at right, reduced from $650 to $550), a vintage garden lounger (reduced from $600 to $400) and a clay tile of a schooner by California ceramist Brent Bennett (reduced from $550 to $350).
