Thursday night I attended the opening of Nick Brandt’s new collection of African animal photographs at the Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles. I was blown away by the intimate portraits. These regal beasts are mesmerizing, part of Brandt’s project ‘to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa.’ The show, which runs through Oct. 17, features new images from his recent Abrams book, ‘A Shadow Falls,’ along with photos from his 2005 Chronicle Books work, ‘On This Earth.’ Pictured above: ‘Buffalo With Lowered Head,’ Lake Nakuru, 2007.

The archival pigment prints start at $2,500 for 20-by-24-inch works in editions of about 25. They run up to $70,000 for the 60-by-80-inch prints in smaller editions of eight.

Hanging one of these magnificent images on a wall would transform any room. If you can’t afford a print, a signed copy of the book, $55, seems like the next best thing. Or you simply can see the show. It’s free. For Brandt’s images of an elephant, rhinoceros, gorilla and giraffes, click to the jump.
