The days are getting shorter. Your tomato plants are a fruitless tangle. Hard to believe it’s time to start thinking about planting your fall vegetable garden. These photos, courtesy of Los Angeles organic gardener Christy Wilhelmi, feature the kind of harvest that makes you forget about summer: green onions, cabbage, broccoli, cilantro, chard, arugula, spinach and more.

You can learn how to grow a similar harvest when Wilhemi hosts a two-hour fall planning workshop on Aug. 29. The session, which is $40, will cover selecting crops, purchasing seeds, planning the space, amending your soil, planting and monitoring progress.
