Charles Phoenix patio party at Heath Ceramics

Retro historian and entertainer Charles Phoenix, best known locally as an enthusiastic lover of midcentury design, will host a free party Thursday in the lovely patio behind Heath Ceramics in Los Angeles. Listen to Phoenix, have an American beer and enjoy a grilled cheese sandwich made on an ironing board -- a pre-panini retro technique, naturally. (I actually Googled this and it made me laugh.) It all takes place from 6 to 8 p.m.

But wait, here’s where it really gets good: Heath will be offering 15% off everything in the store, including handmade ceramic tableware, glassware and books.
