There are crazy things brewing at Rainforest Flora Inc., the country’s largest wholesaler of tillandsias (a.k.a. air plants). As if air plants weren’t already weird and awesome enough, Paul T. Isley III, who co-founded Rainforest Flora, is now breeding them for color. That’s what that the photo is above: hybrid air plant experiments!

You can see the fruit of Isley’s labor at the Rainforest Flora Inc. nursery in Torrance. You’ll also find an enormous collection of staghorn ferns, as well as dozens of varieties of more normal colored tillandsias, neon bromeliads and an over-the-top show garden with waterfalls and the biggest philodendron I’ve ever seen.
