A quick reminder that tomorrow is not only a big day for comic books at the theaters (with ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ hoping to match last year’s ‘Iron Man’ opening weekend) it’s an important day for the grand old publishing business of the sector. Yes, that’s right, actual comics made from dead trees are still sold.

There are a lot of entertainment choices for youngsters these days and, as a parent, I know how tough it is to hold the attention of a youngster when there’s a video game screen nearby. But I also know how great comic-book reading is; I remember going to a dictionary to look up the word ‘annihilation’ when I came across it in a Fantastic Four issue. I write for a living and one reason is the early life passion I got for the written word in superhero stories.

To learn more about the issues that will be handed out by every major publisher or to find a store via zip code search, go the official website of Free Comic Book Day or even download the new Comic Book Shop Locator iPhone application. A few of the titles include DC Comics’ Blackest Night #0, the prelude to ‘Blackest Night’ (their first-ever all-new title for Free Comic Book Day), Shonen Jump (featuring a new chapter of the manga comic Ultimo) and just in time for next week’s ‘Star Trek’ release, William Shatner Presents #1. I’m going to stop by Amazing Comics in Long Beach with my son and daughter -- maybe I’ll see some of you there.
