Family friend Michele Seidman says Hingle died at his home in Carolina Beach shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday. Seidman says he decided to settle in the coastal town after shooting the movie ‘Maximum Overdrive’ in the area in 1986. He lived there for more than 15 years [and] had battled multiple health problems over the last several years.

Hingle was cognizant of his role in Batman and Gordon’s role in Batman’s life. He remarked on it a bit here. His face will always be recognized as part of the Caped Crusader family, but the Tony Award-nominated actor had a lot more to offer the entertainment world.

Hingle was able to tell a bit of his story and address those interested in the man and acting.

Another passing happened on Christmas Day when ‘The Shadow’ illustrator Edward D. Cartier, who also drew for classic science fiction, fantasy, mystery and pulp fiction works by such authors as Isaac Asimov and L. Ron Hubbard, died at 94. The World War II veteran earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star as an infantryman and machine gunner. The Chicago Tribune recently spoke to his son, Dean, who said, ‘He was one of the very last illustrators from the golden age of science fiction. ... He did over 800 illustrations for The Shadow and was still signing autographs [recently].’
