Pacific Crest Trail Gets Upgrades

More than 200 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail have been repaired as part of a projected two-year rehab project funded by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The much-loved trail, which extends 2,650 miles from Mexico to Canada, takes a heavy beating year-round from hikers and other users. The project aims to rebuild and improve portions of the trail by employing young workers from the Student Conservation Assn. to perform the labor-intensive work.

The crews put in more than 34,000 hours of work over the summer and expect to repair an additional 200 miles of trail next year.

The U.S. Forest Service and the federal Bureau of Land Management received more than $4 million for the work, which will continue next year.
