Test-driving a concept: An emissions-free car charged with solar

The soon-to-be released Nissan Leaf and other electric vehicles are zero emissions ... while they're running. To read the L.A. Times column about a truly zero-emissions car (powered with solar), click here.

I'd love to gut my car, install an electric motor and power it off solar panels. isn't there a way to embed small solar cells in fabrics (like the shade things people unfold over their dashboards), or in the rooftops and hoods of cars, to provide mini-charging while your car is out? We should be subsidizing this kind of activity, not oil drilling!
