BILLY’S HOME: After much controversy, the L.A. City Council decided today in an 11-4 vote that Billy the elephant will remain at the L.A. Zoo. Construction for Billy’s new residence, the zoo’s Pachyderm Forest, will begin soon.

WHALE HUNTING: Japan, Iceland and Norway continue to hunt whales in spite of worldwide opposition. The International Whaling Commission has considered allowing Japan to hunt whales off its coast, while Iceland has plans to increase its whale-hunting quota and slaughter 150 fin whales and 100 minke whales over the next five years.
