Well-heeled luminaries from fashion, Hollywood and the arts crowd gathered in Manhattan on Monday night for the 2011 Met Gala, hosted annually by Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and more formally known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Gala Benefit.
This year's exhibit celebrates the life and work of Alexander McQueen (super timely, because that fashion house just dressed Kate Middleton for her wedding to Prince William).
McQueen, of course, took his own life in in February 2010. Wintour was joined by Salma Hayek and her husband, luxury brand mogul Francois-Henri Pinault, in unveiling the exhibit.
Madonna appeared on the arm of manager Guy O'Seary, looking statuesque in a green gown (though nowhere near the hauteness of her 2009 Vuitton bunny ears). Sarah Jessica Parker brought some Carrie Bradshaw fierceness with a glittering flesh-tone McQueen gown and Bravo's Andy Cohen on her arm.
Renee Zellweger wore a similar color, a bit more glowing in a near-perfect showing of glamour after her recent split from actor Bradley Cooper.
There was clearly a color trend to the evening as Gwyneth Paltrow opted for a similar palette, designed in her case by pal Stella McCartney.
Because the Met Gala is all about fashion, big-name designers get to show off who inspires them — for example, Tory Burch suiting up suited Kanye West, Kristen Stewart looking radiant with her dress designers Proenza Schouler, and Thakoon Panichgul making the scene with Mia Wasikowska.
Michelle Williams was still working her pixie magic, rocking a black Miu Miu gown with gold bird detail. Also spotted at the Met Gala: Jennifer Lopez in Gucci, pregnant ladies Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba, Vogue's Hamish Bowles, Ryan Seacrest and Julianne Hough, Zoe Saldana, Freida Pinto, Diane Kruger, and Beyonce.
