Cyndi Lauper gallantly streams past national anthem flub [Video]

Cyndi Lauper flubs the national anthem

Add the name Cyndi Lauper to the list of singers bested by the national anthem. Singing on Saturday at the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York, Lauper declared our flag to be still streaming, or something like that.

Unlike Christina Aguilera at the Super Bowl in February, the "She Bop" singer didn't trip up while attempting crazy vocal runs mid-song -- rather, she said, she was trying to mentally multi-task, given the Sept. 11 significance of the moment, which included a moment of silence for the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Afterward, in a pair of messages on Twitter, Lauper said:

Whew, I just did the anthem for the US open. It was an awesome experience.I got choked up in the middle remembering 9/11.

The moon shone done on us and I tried to say a prayer at the same time.. I hope I didn't mess up too bad. I wanted it to be comforting. Xcyn

Lauper blew only one line, mumbling through it and getting back on track, whereas a belting Aguilera had to pretty much rewrite the middle of the tune on the fly after getting lost along the way. Both women, incidentally, previously performed the song as written. (See Lauper's slip-up around the 48-second mark in the video below.)

Aguilera said at the time that she "got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through."

Two artists, two flubs, two solutions. And two very different dresses, we might add: Lauper's Statue of Liberty chic vs. Aguilera's basic black.

Forgive and forget?

Lindsay Lohan gets a Billy Joel-inspired tattoo [Music video]

Billy Joel is now one with Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is making a statement again, this time tattooing the words of Billy Joel on her rib cage, just south of her right underarm.

The inked lyrics -- "Clear as a crystal, sharp as a knife I feel like I'm in the prime of my life" -- are from "I Go to Extremes," a cut from Joel's 1989 album "Storm Front."

The tattoo represents "where she is in life and everything she's been through ... it signifies that she's focused," a source told TMZ, which has an exclusive picture of the body art.

Those who have been students of La Lohan in recent years might find multiple meanings in the song.

Watch Joel performing the song, below, or read the "I Go to Extreme" lyrics here and then tell us in comments: does the song selection make sense as a Lohan landmark? In the Ministry's opinion, the lyrics play different ways on the page and on the stage.

Of course, other suggestions are welcome (just keep it clean, please).

Nicki Minaj tunes in Tokyo with her MTV VMAs ensemble

Nicky Minaj dress channels Harajuku, Tokyo street style

Nicky Minaj didn't disappoint with the dress -- and the whole lot more -- that she wore to the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

"Tokyo inspires this outfit," the winner for hip-hop video said backstage Sunday. "You know, Harajuku is something I have been absorbing for a very long time."

(Harajuku is, of course, Tokyo street style, in case anyone was wondering if the term was Japanese for "Dr. Seuss.")

Watch the video to see who's responsible for various facets of the ensemble and also to hear about Roman, who Minaj says is "the boy who lives inside of me, he's a lunatic and he's gay," and he's going to be big on her next album.

Glen Campbell on Alzheimer's: Needing the ones he loves, Lord

Glen Campbell and wife Kim

Glen Campbell, who revealed his Alzheimer's disease diagnosis in June, will release what he's calling his "final album" next week and go out on a farewell tour starting in October — and in the meantime, he's doing a farewell round of interviews, with wife Kim Woollen filling in some of the blanks.

"I haven't felt it yet," Campbell said of the Alzheimer's, speaking to ABC News. "I've always been forgetful anyway. I'm only, what, 78?"

Seventy-five, Woollen prompted as he looked her way.

"I just take care of him, which is a big job," said his wife of nearly 30 years. "We'd been noticing short-term memory loss for quite some time. You know, he repeats himself. Tells the same joke several times in a row."

"Well, yeah, it's funny," Campbell joked (watch the interview, below).

The couple went through a similar exchange — presumably intentionally — when they sat down with the Los Angeles Times' Randy Lewis for an profile out this Sunday.

"It hasn't affected me in any way. I haven't felt anything. In fact, I don't even know what it is. Who came up with that?" he said with a laugh.

"Your doctor," Woollen answered.

"Well, he’s probably wrong," Campbell replied.

The singer also talked to The Times about his years with the Wrecking Crew, studio musicians who had a reputation for knocking out hits with the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, the Monkees and more.

Campbell, in fact, owns the fingers behind the opening riff to the Beach Boys' "Fun, Fun, Fun" and eventually wound up filling Brian Wilson's shoes in the band when the group's founder traded touring for studio work. "I was very happy to be playing with the Beach Boys. The only thing I didn't like was that I had to play bass.

"Those bass strings can grind your little pinkies down real quick," he said with a laugh.

"Ghost on the Canvas" features some poignant lyrics in "A Better Place," a song Campbell has been performing live for more than a year: "Some days I'm so confused, Lord. My past gets in my way. I need the ones I love, Lord. More and more each day.

"One thing I know, the world's been good to me."

Rocker chick Taylor Momsen has 'quit acting,' she reminds us all

Taylor Momsen fronts the Pretty Reckless

It's not so much that acting has quit Taylor Momsen -- rather, Taylor Momsen has quit acting, the 18-year-old made clear in a recent backstage interview in Tokyo.

Momsen's relationship with "Gossip Girl" ended in May, when she and Jessica Szhor were not renewed as series regulars. At that point, Momsen had already made it clear that her band, the Pretty Reckless, was taking center stage in her life.

"I quit acting, actually," the not-an-actress told Elle magazine on Saturday in Japan, in case anyone had forgotten. "I quit 'Gossip Girl' and now tour and am in a band and that's pretty much all I want to do.

"Hopefully I'll be able to only do that for the rest of my life."

Convenient, then, that Momsen also was replaced by Kelly Osbourne in January as the face of the Material Girl clothing line by Lourdes Ciccone and birthday girl Madonna.

The music-is-my-life thing is consistent with what Momsen was saying in April on the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards red carpet, before the whole "Gossip Girl" thing ended. "I've been writing songs since I was 5 years old," she told the Ministry, "so that's what I want to do with my life is make records and tour until I'm dead."

Momsen, whose acting credits include "Gossip Girl" and playing Cindy Lou Who in the 2000 Jim Carrey version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," was nominated for a breakout female star Teen Choice Award in 2008.

The award went to Blake Lively, also of "Gossip Girl," whose acting resume includes roles in "The Town," "Green Lantern" and "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants."
