James Cameron travels between worlds to 'Titanic 3-D' premiere

James Cameron signs autographs at the "Titanic 3-D" premiere

James Cameron went from complete isolation seven miles under the sea Monday to the cameras and crowds of the "Titanic 3-D" premiere in London on Tuesday, sharing the red carpet with lovely creature Kate Winslet after leaving the tiny shrimp-like critters that had been his only visible companions at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench.

The 1997 film, which won 11 Oscars, including best picture, is being re-released in 3-D around the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's doomed maiden voyage, which ended with the ship's sinking on April 15, 1912.

"One of the reasons I made 'Titanic' was that I was fascinated by deep sea exploration," the director told reporters at the premiere, held at the Royal Albert Hall. "It was an opportunity to dive in a submarine very deep at that time."

"The 3-D enriches all of 'Titanic's' most thrilling moments and its most emotional moments,” said Cameron, who attended with wife Suzy Amis on his arm. "It kicks the whole experience up to another level.”

Winslet, who starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie, joked that she would rather look away than see herself nude in 3-D.

"I'm not going to look, I'll be in the bar by that point," she said.

Cameron has visited the wreck of Titanic, around 12,600 feet below the sea, 35 times in his history of 72 deep-sea submersible dives.

On Monday, more than 36,000 feet undersea, "My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity,” Cameron told reporters shortly after the dive. "I felt like I literally, in the space of one day, had gone to another planet and come back. It's been a very surreal day."

Other cast members spotted at the premiere included Billy Zane, Bill Paxton, Frances Fisher, Rochelle Rose, Jason Barry and Bernard Hill, who played ship Capt. Edward James Smith.

"Titanic 3-D" opens April 4 in U.S. theaters.

'The Vow' premiere: Making Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams cry

Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams

It's no secret that "The Vow," the romantic drama starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, is a tear-jerker. So what movies cause its stars to get a little emotional?

"I cry at 'Finding Neverland,'" Tatum admitted at the Hollywood premiere of the film Monday evening.

"Oh, yeah. That's a sad one," McAdams agreed, adding that the film that always gets her is "The Way We Were."

PHOTOS: 'The Vow' premiere

"I mean, I woke my sister up [from crying so loud]. She was sleeping while I was watching it and woke up and was, like, 'What's wrong? What's going on here?'"

"The Vow" is sure to induce a few sobbing sessions of its own when it hits theaters Friday. The film is based on the real-life tale of Krickitt Carpenter, a newlywed who got into an automobile accident and lost all memory of her husband, Kim.

The Carpenters, who attended the premiere, said "The Vow" filmmakers spent time studying video interviews of the couple to "nail their personalities."

"The way in which it's done is very moving. I cried," Kim Carpenter said. "Rachel and Channing just did an unbelievable job, and I think their portrayal was just dead on."

Meanwhile, the young women lining Hollywood Boulevard may have been eager to catch a glimpse of Tatum, but we were more excited to catch up with Scott Speedman. That's right, ladies, Ben from "Felicity."

Speedman, who has mostly stuck to independent films since the college soap concluded in 2002, told us he enjoyed playing McAdams' character's jerky ex-fiancé.

"This is my first time in a while I've done a big ... movie," he said. "[Before], I was just wanting to do darker, weirder things, and now I'm trying to do bigger things."

And, we had to ask: Might there be a "Felicity" reunion in the cards? And if so, where would Ben be in his life?

"I thought it'd funny if he was in a darker place," Speedman said of his old character. When the show ended, "he was trying to be a doctor; I think maybe he didn't make it, though."

‘Mysterious Island’: Kristin Davis wants to pet Josh Hutcherson

Kristin Davis and Josh Hutcherson

The characters in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" encounter all manner of unusual animals on the film's Jules Verne-inspired island, but the only creature actress Kristin Davis wanted to pet Thursday was costar Josh Hutcherson.

The "Sex and the City" star revealed that she was a big fan of Hutcherson’s performance in "The Kids Are All Right" and said she prepared for playing the 19-year-old's mother by getting tips from Mama Hutcherson herself.

"I talked to Josh's mom. I said, 'I always want to pet him,'" Davis told Ministry of Gossip at the film’s L.A. premiere Thursday at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. "She said, 'You can’t really touch them when they get to this age, 'cause they feel like you're making them like a kid.' ... In the movie I had to scold him. But I felt bad because Josh is such a mature young man."

The family adventure movie, a sequel to 2008’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” takes 17-year-old Sean (Hutcherson) and his stepfather (Dwayne Johnson) to a mystical island in search of Sean’s grandfather (played by Michael Caine).

In preparation for filming underwater scenes, Hutcherson and Johnson got scuba-diving certification.

"I've always wanted to get scuba certified, and this was a great excuse, and I didn't have to pay for it!": said Hutcherson, who will next be seen in the much-anticipated "The Hunger Games" in March.

Johnson, a.k.a. "The Rock," may be most recognized for his wrestling career and tough-guy roles in movies like last year’s "Fast Five," but Hutcherson busted that stereotype.

"He's fun, he's charismatic, he's outgoing. He has a sensitive side," the actor told reporters. "But he’s also very physical and has the whole action hero side as well."

Luis Guzmán, who plays the helicopter pilot who takes Sean and his stepfather to the Mysterious Island, said of Johnson, "He is the man. I'd work with Dwayne any day of the week. He certainly made an action hero out of me. I'm just waiting for my action figure to come out."

"Journey 2" brought Johnson home to Hawaii, where he grew up, a location that costar Vanessa Hudgens took plenty of time to enjoy.

"The adventures I got to have in my downtime –- I would take my car and drive around, go to the North Shore, hang out, check out the waves, go on a bunch of dives cause I'm certified," Hudgens said of filming on Oahu. "I'm such an adventurer, and I love being on the island."

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” hits theaters Feb. 10.

'Albert Nobbs': Glenn Close's busy week includes Mia Wasikowska

Glenn Close, right, and Mia Wasikowska

Glenn Close, in the middle of shooting the fifth and final season of her TV series "Damages," is having a busy week: She landed a Screen Actors Guild award nomination Wednesday morning for her starring role in "Albert Nobbs," a film she also produced, co-wrote and, on Tuesday night, promoted at a special screening.

Though she'd already premiered "Albert Nobbs" in September at the Telluride Film Festival, she made time to step out for a special screening Tuesday at New York City's Museum of Modern Art sponsored by Giorgio Armani and the Cinema Society.

Close's costar Mia Wasikowska also showed up, as well as newlywed Sinead O'Connor, who sings the song "Lay Your Head Down" that runs during the film's closing credits.

"To think [the film] was made for just under $8 million and took 34 days," Close told The Times on Wednesday morning.

"When you see the incredible work done in that time, it represents some of the best there is across all areas, from the makeup and hair to our production designer, the DP, the actors -- everyone."

Angelina Jolie brings 'Blood and Honey' to L.A. with Brad

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

For Angelina Jolie, an intimate gathering would seem impossible given that she's one of the most famous women in the world. But somehow, on Thursday in Hollywood, she and partner Brad Pitt managed just that in support of her film "In The Land of Blood and Honey."

On a promotional tour that has seen broadcast sit-downs and a New York opening, Jolie screened her Bosnian love-and-war epic for industry types and friends, and about 200 of her and Pitt's biggest fans (one had a "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" poster waiting to be signed).

Spending an unusual amount of time on the red carpet to hype the project, Jolie rolled with a team but was never far from Pitt, who held the excess fabric of her blue gown as she descended the stairs at the ArcLight Cinemas.

Her father, Jon Voight, showed up to lend support, as did Jolie's girlfriend and fellow mom Gwen Stefani, but the evening's focus was the devastating ethnic cleansing depicted in "Blood and Honey," which features a cameo by Brad Pitt (his appearance is quick and brutal).

That made for a humble after-party at an event space two blocks from the theater, where maroon drapes gave a holiday vibe to well-wishers like Eli Roth, pals with Pitt since "Inglourious Basterds," and Sony Pictures co-chair Amy Pascal.

Jolie greeted virtually everyone, indulged in conversation and made sure all were fed and watered. Something she's got to be well-versed at at home with her and Pitt's six kids. But Thursday, as intimately as she could achieve, was about work.

Christian Bale: 'Dark Knight Rises' is the end of his Batman era

Christian Bale on "The Dark Knight Rises" set

Christian Bale may be retiring his Batmobile: The actor says he's done with "that Batman era."

"The Dark Knight Rises" will be "the end of that Batman era" -- the era belonging to him and director Christopher Nolan -- Bale said in an interview published Friday by the Philippines' largest daily newspaper.

"I wrapped a few days ago so that will be the last time I'm taking that cowl off," he told the Philippines Daily Inquirer, referring to the hood that protects Bruce Wayne's identity when he's Batman. "I believe that the whole production wrapped yesterday, so it's all done." He said playing the role has been "enjoyable."

During a press junket for his upcoming film "The Flowers of War," Bale touched on the complexities of his take on Bruce Wayne/Batman. "Bruce Wayne is absolutely sincere as Bruce Wayne, and as Batman utterly sincere. But Bruce Wayne, the playboy, is a pure facade, it's a lie he has, somehow, to control one side of your soul that's not really under control. In fact, only Alfred knows who he is.

"It's time for Bruce Wayne to face the pain, that has always stirred his life."

Incidentally, Bale said, costar Anne Hathaway might have had the least enjoyable time during filming. "There are a number of people who feel that the Catwoman role has been defined previously. So, I always saw Anne's role as being the toughest job of any of us."

And that's without considering the skin-tight Catwoman costume, or that hard-to-maneuver Cat-cycle.

Bale has been the face behind the Batman mask since 2005's "Batman Begins," followed by "The Dark Knight" in 2008. "The Dark Knight Rises," now in post-production, is slated for release next July.

'Hugo': Martin Scorsese clocks in with a younger good fella

"Hugo" premiere: Asa Butterfield, Martin Scorsese and Chloe Moretz

Martin Scorsese's usual good fellas made way for a 12-year-old boy hero and a dramatic dose of 3-D as the director's kids' movie "Hugo" premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York.

Based on Brian Selznick's award-winning novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," the film stars Asa Butterfield as Hugo and Chloe Moretz as Isabelle. The young actors joined Scorsese and wife Helen Morris on the red carpet Monday, as did cast members including Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer and Frances de la Tour.

The story is set in 1930s Paris, and those visuals are one of the movie's strengths, The Times' Kenneth Turan said in his "Hugo" review. Though this is Scorsese's first foray into 3-D, "If everything moves along and there's no major catastrophe, we're headed toward holograms," the director told 24 Frames earlier this month.

Also spotted on the red carpet: "Boardwalk Empire" star Steve Buscemi with wife Jo Anders, Vera Farmiga, Tony Bennett, Julie Taymor, Spike Lee, Patricia Clarkson and screenwriter-director Paul Haggis,

"Hugo" opens Wednesday.

'Breaking Dawn' premiere: live-streaming video from the black carpet

PHOTOS: "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" premiere

"Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" premiere camp in L.A.

This post has been corrected, as indicated below.

One big difference between the "Breaking Dawn" premiere campers, and the folks farther northeast downtown at Occupy L.A.? The Twi-hards have a clear set of demands: "Twilight," "Twilight" and more "Twilight" -- and if you would cap that with a little Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner on the red carpet before "Breaking Dawn -- Part 1" premieres at the Nokia Theatre, everyone would go home happy.

The "Breaking Dawn" fans, who've been camped in tents gathered under a larger tent at L.A. Live since Wednesday, got some extra entertainment Sunday morning: Supporting cast members, including Cullen family patriarch Peter Facinelli, vampire Jackson Rathbone, werewolf BooBoo Stewart and Denali vixens Casey LaBow and MyAnna Buring showed up for a breakfast-time autograph session and photo fest ahead of Monday's big event.

The "big three" stars will hit the scene Monday evening.

Twilight saga author Stephenie Meyer also showed ahead of the red carpet for the first time, handing out 600 pre-autographed copies of "Breaking Dawn" and delighting fans, some of whom thanked her for friendships that had resulted because of her books.

"They're really kind to each other, which I love, and all very excited," Meyer said in a video interview Sunday, "and looking pretty good for having slept on the street."

The Ministry of Gossip will have the premiere's official live-streaming video from the red carpet starting at 5 p.m. PST -- so either bookmark this post or come back to the Ministry later to see KStew, RPattz, Taylor and more from the red carpet in Los Angeles.

There's a premiere in London's Stratford district Wednesday, and the movie hits U.S. theaters Friday.

[For the record, 6:11 p.m.: As commenters Andrea Lavigne and Candice Davis point out below, this post originally mixed up details on roles played by Jackson Rathbone, Casey LaBow and MyAnna Buring. Should be right now! No excuses, just blushing bright red right -- now back to the live feed and Twitter!/cdz.]

Tom Cruise takes ‘Mission: Impossible’ to new heights [Video]

MissionimpossibleStory
Tom Cruise went to great lengths, or should we say, great heights for his latest turn as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the new “Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol” (see the new trailer below).

His latest mission? Performing some of his own stunt work, including scaling the outside of the Burj Khalifa, also known as the tallest building on the planet! Towering over the city of Dubai, the skyscraper is a staggering 2,723 feet high.

Watch the featurette below as the 49-year-old jumps out a window, swings around the exterior and runs and climbs across the windows, all with the help of some hefty cables. As director Brad Bird says in the clip, “This is just another day at work on ‘Mission Impossible.’”

The new trailer offers a few more plot and action details, but mainly reinforces the premise that Hunt and his IMF (Impossible Missions Force) pals are going rogue after being framed for a terrorist bombing at the Kremlin in Moscow.

Ghost Protocol, some type of black ops mission, is initiated, and the espionage team is left on their  own to clear their names. However, if they are caught, they will be branded as terrorists seeking global nuclear war.

In addition to Cruise, Simon Pegg returns as gadget guru Benji Dunn, while Paula Patton joins as the female lead and Jeremy Renner as a brooding and mysterious new IMF agent named Brandt (rumored to be carrying on the franchise after Tom).

The action flick is set to open wide Dec. 21, with an early IMAX debut Dec. 16.

The couple "are overjoyed with this news and they look forward to welcoming this newest addition into their family," Willis' rep said in a statement.

Emma, 35, a designer and model, married Willis in 2009. They're expecting their bundle of joy early next year.
