Mary Tyler Moore recovering after 4-hour surgery to remove benign tumor

Mary Tyler Moore is recovering after surgery Mary Tyler Moore is "recovering nicely" after a four-hour operation to remove a benign tumor -- a meningioma -- from the membrane that surrounds her brain, the actress' rep said Friday.

"The tumor was resected in its entirety and she will require no additional treatment," said the statement, which didn't detail where or when the surgery occurred. Husband Robert Levine, a physician, was reportedly at her side.

Though the 74-year-old actress' plan to have the elective surgery was made public Thursday, Moore and her neurologist had been monitoring the tumor for years. The costar of "The Dick Van Dyke" show married Levine, her third husband, in 1983.

She recently did a guest spot on the sitcom "Hot in Cleveland," alongside former "Mary Tyler Moore Show" costar Betty White.

Mary Tyler Moore to have brain surgery

This post has been corrected. See the note below for details.

Actress Mary Tyler Moore will undergo elective brain surgery to remove a benign tumor, a meningioma, from the lining tissue around her brain, her rep said Thursday.

"The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show" star is choosing surgery "at the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon," her rep told People.

This type of tumor arises from the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, according to Brigham and Women's Hospital, and occurs most commonly in older women. Moore is 74.

Moore's rep called the surgery "fairly routine." The actress appears with Van Dyke on "The Rachael Ray Show" on Thursday -- or check out the Emmy winner's politically incorrect job interview with Ed Asner's Lou Grant, above.

For the record, 3:00 p.m., May 12: This post originally referred to a meningioma as a brain tumor. The growth -- in Moore's case benign -- is a tumor of the lining tissue of the brain, not a brain tumor.
