Millennium Awards: Mark Ruffalo honored for green stance (no, not his Hulk role in 'The Avengers')

Going green is the new black, in the eyes of Global Green USA's 15th annual Millennium Awards, which on Saturday honored celebs Mark Ruffalo and the always-Earth-minded Ed Begley Jr. for their planet-first efforts.

Ruffalo was on hand in Santa Monica to receive the Entertainment Industry Environmental Leadership Award for his fight to ban hydrofracking, a controversial method of getting natural gas out of rocks by using chemicals and water (Don't even think about it, "Battlestar Galactica" fans). That'd be the same fight — which included setting up screenings of the film "Gasland" — that reportedly got him added to a terror advisory watch list last year.

"The Avengers" actor — fittingly, he is cast as the brightly hued Hulk — wasn't the only green celeb on hand to commune in the name of nature. Along with Begley, who took home the award for individual environmental leadership, and Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, who won the leadership award in 2005, famous names out in force to support the cause included model Miranda Kerr and actor hubby Orlando Bloom, Ed O'Neil, presenter Jamie Lee Curtis and Michelle Rodriguez.

Global Green USA, founded in 1994 as the U.S. extension of Green Cross International, a nonprofit created by former Russian President Mikhail S. Gorbachev in 1993, advocates for climate change solutions in areas including energy conservation, CO2 emission reduction, creation of green jobs and the securing of a more sustainable future.

Oscars: Mark Ruffalo happy to share his nod with wife Sunrise Coigney [Video]

Mark Ruffalo counted himself "a little excited ... a little tired, but ... mostly very happy" Sunday as he arrived at the Academy Awards with wife Sunrise Coigney. "And I'm very happy to be here with this beautiful woman, who I share ... this nomination with."

Contrast that with being "excited ... tired, but mostly content and slightly hung over" before the Spirit Awards on Saturday.

OK, not that much of a contrast, but hey, the supporting actor nominee has been working the red carpet for just about ever now, right?

Ruffalo said he tweeted his thank yous Sunday, "on the slim chance that I don't win," which sparked a bit of harrumphing from Coigney. "She hates it when I say that," he said. "I know I'm not going to win!"

Delighted to have his "The Kids Are All Right" outing included among what he called "showier" performances, including Christian Bale's turn in "The Fighter," Ruffalo admitted: "I'm super quiet. I'm shy, actually. This is all an act."

Entering the final weekend of a nearly five-month-long award circuit, many actors are ready for the junkets, luncheons and red carpets to end. Mark Ruffalo, up for best supporting actor for his role in "The Kids Are All Right" at the Oscars on Sunday, said he's been patiently awaiting the close of a grueling season.

"I'm excited, I'm tired, but mostly content and slightly hung over," the actor said Saturday at the Independent Spirit Awards, where he was also nominated in that category, for that film.

While many are anticipating that Christian Balewill take supporting actor on Sunday, Ruffalo said he would -- not surprisingly -- be pleased if there was a shake-up.

"I'm always up for a surprise. You know, things get too boring if it's too patent, so I'm hoping to see some surprises tomorrow," he said, grinning.

To keep his mind off all the Hollywood fanfare, Ruffalo has become active on Twitter, where he often sends out messages about social causes.

"It's a pretty interesting tool for democracy," he said of the social-media site. "Things like Twitter and Facebook on the surface appear totally kind of shallow and trite. But I started Twitter when the Iranian revolution began and I witnessed that revolution go down on Twitter in first person. And it was one of the most exciting things I had experienced in my young adult life."

Mark Ruffalo added to coveted terror advisory list

Mark-ruffalo Sure, award season is just warming up, but it looks as if Mark Ruffalo has already been added to one exclusive list. The boyishly handsome, innocent-looking star of films such as "The Kids Are All Right" and "Zodiac" has been added to a terror advisory list, San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Why? He says it's because he organized screenings for the new documentary on natural gas drilling, "GasLand." Pennsylvania's Office of Homeland Security reportedly took notice of his efforts to raise awareness of the drilling and call for a stop to it, so they added him to the list.

Congratulations, Mark?

Laura Dern, Diane Ladd, Bruce Dern get stars on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Dern-family

Dern-ruffalo-lynch Diane Ladd, Laura Dern and Bruce Dern got a constellation's worth of stars Monday on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, marking the first time three family members received stars side by side on Hollywood Boulevard.

"I ask the universe that these three stars right here -- when I'm dead and gone or if I'm still alive-- that whoever comes and looks at it or stands on it, may the energy of the three of our lives permeate into their foundation and help each and every one fulfill their destiny with joy and love, as I wish for you," said Ladd, 74.

Ladd was married to Dern from 1960 to 1969, and Laura was born in 1967. Mother and daughter appeared together in "Rambling Rose" as well as "Wild at Heart," directed by David Lynch, who with actor Mark Ruffalo did the honors during the star ceremony.

Julianne Moore feels the buzz at 'The Kids Are All Right' premiere

After its buzzworthy Sundance run in January, Lisa Cholodenko's "The Kids Are All Right" was spotted as an early awards contender by many critics.

Kids-Are-All-Right-pictures Such hype is exciting for Julianne Moore, who plays one half of the lesbian couple in the film (Annette Bening plays her partner) whose two teenage kids (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson) decide to track down their sperm-donor dad (Mark Ruffalo).

On Thursday, Moore gathered in downtown L.A. with the cast (minus Bening, who bowed out for personal reasons) for the film's premiere, which was the kickoff event at this year's 10-day L.A. Film Festival. On the red carpet, she said she is heartened by the positive feedback the film has received thus far.

"You certainly feel the interest, and that’s what you want," she told us on the red carpet. "You make movies hoping that people are going to enjoy them and go to see them. And this one, certainly, they’re saying, 'Oh, I want to see it, I want to see it, I want to see it.' So, yeah, that makes us very glad."

She added that a festival held in the City of Angels was the perfect place to launch the L.A.-centric film, which was shot largely here.

"It’s always great to be here. It’s a movie about a family that lives in L.A., so I think this is a very appropriate venue for us," she smiled.
