Kate Winslet says her 'Titanic' acting could have been better

Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet may be her own toughest critic when it comes to her performance in "Titanic."

The 36-year-old Oscar winner, who turned up at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Tuesday for the  premiere of the 3-D re-release of the box-office juggernaut, had some thoughts on the quality of her turn as Rose DeWitt.

"My American accent could've been much better. My acting could've been a lot better," the actress confessed to MTV.

We'll give her a break, as Winslet was a mere 21 when she shot the iceberg epic alongside Leonardo DiCaprio (who was absent from the British premiere, held up filming Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained").

Winslet said she's not concerned about her mug having that revealing third dimension for worldwide viewers.

"I think I look nicer now," she said. "I prefer myself as a 36-year-old. It's really weird 'cause when you're 21 you think, 'Oh, God, when I'm 36, oh God, that's nearly 40 and I'll look really old and wrinkly by then.' And actually I quite like the way I look. I feel OK about myself these days."

James Cameron travels between worlds to 'Titanic 3-D' premiere

James Cameron signs autographs at the "Titanic 3-D" premiere

James Cameron went from complete isolation seven miles under the sea Monday to the cameras and crowds of the "Titanic 3-D" premiere in London on Tuesday, sharing the red carpet with lovely creature Kate Winslet after leaving the tiny shrimp-like critters that had been his only visible companions at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench.

The 1997 film, which won 11 Oscars, including best picture, is being re-released in 3-D around the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's doomed maiden voyage, which ended with the ship's sinking on April 15, 1912.

"One of the reasons I made 'Titanic' was that I was fascinated by deep sea exploration," the director told reporters at the premiere, held at the Royal Albert Hall. "It was an opportunity to dive in a submarine very deep at that time."

"The 3-D enriches all of 'Titanic's' most thrilling moments and its most emotional moments,” said Cameron, who attended with wife Suzy Amis on his arm. "It kicks the whole experience up to another level.”

Winslet, who starred with Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie, joked that she would rather look away than see herself nude in 3-D.

"I'm not going to look, I'll be in the bar by that point," she said.

Cameron has visited the wreck of Titanic, around 12,600 feet below the sea, 35 times in his history of 72 deep-sea submersible dives.

On Monday, more than 36,000 feet undersea, "My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity,” Cameron told reporters shortly after the dive. "I felt like I literally, in the space of one day, had gone to another planet and come back. It's been a very surreal day."

Other cast members spotted at the premiere included Billy Zane, Bill Paxton, Frances Fisher, Rochelle Rose, Jason Barry and Bernard Hill, who played ship Capt. Edward James Smith.

"Titanic 3-D" opens April 4 in U.S. theaters.

Kate Winslet spends quality time with Ned Branson, kids

Kate Winslet for St John

Consider this your Kardashian-divorce palate cleanser: Kate Winslet has talent, style and a new boyfriend, and we think you should know about it.

After she braved a fire, sans undergarments, on Richard Branson's Necker Island (shout out for saving Grandma), the world was tipped off that Winslet, who recently split from director Sam Mendes, had taken up with the Virgin honcho's nephew, Ned.

After a few sly dates here and there, Ned is now spending time with Winslet's children, Mia and Joe. The four of them were spotted roving the streets of chilly New York on Thursday.

If her personal life is sailing, work is on par -- the actress stars in award-season contender "Carnage," directed by Roman Polanski and costarring Jodie Foster, John C. Riley and Christoph Waltz.

She also continues to front St. John, the fashion house once repped by Angelina Jolie, most recently debuting stunning images including the one above for its spring campaign.

Kate Winslet tells the naked truth behind fire rescue

Kate Winslet is clearly alluring as a heroine, but until now few knew how very alluring she was while getting her kids and Richard Branson's mother to safety during an August fire in the British Virgin Islands.

Over the weekend, the Oscar winner fleshed out previously scant details from the night of the blaze with some scantily-clad details offered on the BBC's "The Graham Norton Show."

Upon waking in the middle of the night to shouts outside the Virgin honcho's home on private Necker Island, Winslet said she first ran toward the fire, "because clearly I thought I could put it out." Then again, maybe not this one, Kate — the lightning-sparked blaze wound up destroying the Great House.

After pausing to figure out her next move, she reached for — a bra? Well, of course. "In disastrous moments like that, you do the strangest things," she said. "I started to put on a bra and thought, 'No, that's going to take me too long,' so off came the bra, on came the T-shirt, grabbed the bag, grabbed the children and picked up granny,"

Granny was 90-year-old Eve Branson, who'd been among the 20 people staying in the eight-bedroom Great House where Vanessa Minnillo and Nick Lachey were married in July.

So, did she really save Eve's life? "No," Winslet said. "I didn't save her life. I carried her downstairs is the truth of it." But they were in fact in the middle of a hurricane as well as a "genuinely very scary" fire, she said, not to mention at the top of some slippery stone steps.

Watch the interview below. Printed quotes don't do Winslet's story-telling skills justice.

Kate Winslet, Lea Michele have us seeing red on the Emmy carpet

Emmy Awards 2011: a parade of red dresses

Talk about red carpet sirens — the ladies of the Emmy Awards were tres liberal with the color red for Sunday's telecast.

"Glee" gal Lea Michele opted for a red Marchesa number with super-constructed shoulders and her normal hairstyle, blowout with bangs. Nina Dobrev looked a shade similar in a curve-hugging Donna Karan.

"Mildred Pierce" nominee (and winner-to-be) Kate Winslet did a sweet and stylish hair tuck with a cleavage-baring red gown, while Sofia Vergara went a note lighter in an almost-coral Vera Wang number.

What do you think of the fire engine vibe at this year's Emmys? Tell us in comments.

Venice Film Festival: Kate Winslet expounds on projectile vomiting

Kate Winslet is a vomit wizard

Kate Winslet really has it all: an A-list career, a body to die for and a strong hold on projectile vomiting.

You heard us. Winslet, sweeping the Venice Film Festival with her adorable dresses and dangerous curves, is a pro at tossing her cookies on camera.

Photos: Scenes from the 2011 Venice Film Festival

In the Roman Polanski-directed "Carnage," Winslet plays a neurotic wife and mother who loses her lunch at a seemingly civilized sit-down between two couples discussing a schoolyard fight between their boys.

"I had to contain a lot of vomit in my mouth which is not possible for a person to do," the actress said Thursday at a press conference for the film. "So without going into too much detail, it was a fairly complex rig, and there was some extremely clever CGI involved."

She really does lead a glamorous life. While the "Exorcist" moment might leave a bad taste in your mouth, consider Winslet's recent act of bravery in helping Richard Branson's mother escape a tragic fire on his luxurious Necker Island. If that doesn't help, there's always sawdust.

"Carnage" also stars Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster and John C. Riley.

Kate Winslet escapes a fire on Richard Branson's private island

Kate Winslet and her children were among those who escaped safely from an overnight fire that destroyed the Great House on billionaire Richard Branson's private island in the British Virgin Islands.

Twenty people, including the Oscar-winning actress, Branson's mother, Eve, and his daughter, Holly, were staying in the eight-bedroom Great House. The Virgin honcho, who lost an office and thousands of pictures in the ruined building on Necker Island, was staying nearby with his wife and 25-year-old son Sam.

"We had a really bad tropical storm with winds up to 90 miles per hour. A big lightning storm came around 4 a.m. and hit the house," Branson said Monday in a statement.

"My son Sam rushed to the house and helped get everyone out."

Winslet was vacationing with her 10-year-old daughter, Mia, her 7-year-old son, Joe, and her on-and-off boyfriend, British model Louis Dowler. Winslet and husband Sam Mendes split up last year.

Necker Island sounding familiar? That's where Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo got married -- and filmed their TLC wedding special -- in July. It was also expected to be the site of Holly Branson's wedding to fiance Fred Andrews later this year.

"We want to rebuild the house as soon as we can," papa Branson said. "We have a wonderful staff here and we want them to stay in work. We'll all stay here for the time being. There's a lot of damage and we won't be able to stick it back together again right away.

"It was a beautiful house."
