Elton John, Emily Blunt premiere 'Gnomeo & Juliet' in Hollywood

Gnomeo and Juliet premiere

Emily Blunt, Disney's latest leading lady, might sum up her new flick "Gnomeo & Juliet" best: "I thought, 'This story's definitely not been done before, garden gnomes doing Shakespeare.'"

Gavin-rossdale-gnomeo Indeed the kitschy lawn characters bring the classic "Romeo and Juliet" to life in the new animated film, which was given its world premiere Sunday at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood.

Elton John gave fans a thrill with an appearance (he and partner David Furnish served as executive producers on the film) and even surprised lucky ticket holders after the 3-D screening with numbers such as "Crocodile Rock."

Elton collaborates with Lady Gaga on a duet for the soundtrack, a cutesy pop track called "Hello Hello." The ditty plays when Blunt's Juliet first meets her Gnomeo -- voiced by James McAvoy.

On the red carpet, McAvoy discussed having the legendary singer as a boss.

"It's quite intimidating," he said. "I'm trying not to look at him right now because I'd probably melt."

Following the performance and screening, a sweet dessert reception was held across the street for cast and crew. Click the pic of Gavin Rossdale, above left, to see more photos from the "Gnomeo and Juliet" red carpet.

Elton John welcomes a baby with David Furnish -- in tradition with the family plan

This is an updated version of an earlier post. Please see the note below. Elton John David Furnish

Elton John and David Furnish are parents of a new baby boy, born on Christmas in California to a surrogate.

Elton John and David Furnish have a baby son In a joint statement, the new parents told USMagazine.com that "Zachary is healthy and doing well" and said they are "overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment."

Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John  weighed in at 7 pounds, 15 ounces. John, 63, and Furnish, 48, a couple for 17 years, have been in a civil partnership since 2005. The identity of the surrogate and  details of the surrogacy are being kept private, the couple said.

John's song "Levon" was released in 1971, on his fourth album, "Madman Across the Water," which also included the classic "Tiny Dancer." Video of the pop star performing "Levon" for his 60th birthday is above; the original recording is embedded below.

For the record, 11: 20 a.m. Wednesday: An earlier version of this post gave John's age incorrectly as 62. The singer is 63. (But really, he doesn't look a day over 62, dontcha think?)

Rush Limbaugh gets married, and Elton John is the wedding singer [poll] [updated]

Elton-rush-web Rush Limbaugh got married on Saturday night to Kathryn Rogers in Palm Beach, Fla., complete with 400 guests, no media, a high-flying shout-out from the folks at Gawker and music by Elton John.

Among the folks trading the worlds of politics and political commentary for the Ponce de Leon ballroom at the Breakers hotel: Karl Rove, Sean Hannity, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, James Carville and Mary Matalin.

Elton has been slammed by some over saying yes to Rush's offer -- the civil-partnered gay man who reportedly kept the hotel staff hopping is said to have hauled in a million bucks for his night's work at Limbaugh's fourth such celebration of nuptials. But before you clutch your pearls in shock ...

David Archuleta sings, and maybe we should leave it at that

Archie-web You know how there are some videos you kind of wish you never saw? Like the really sad one with the two cats that's been going around? Before you click "play" and watch David Archuleta singing "Works for Me," above, remember that we warned you.

No, Archie doesn't get hit by a car or anything. And yes, his singing -- on a tune co-written and performed with Toby Lightman -- is quite nice.

It's just the look on his face while chatting afterward, when "Fox & Friends" host Brian Kilmeade, in a wee burst of reality-based interviewing, suggests to the 19-year-old that mayyyyybe pop icons Madonna and Elton John would not be likely to clear their calendars for multiple months to fill Simon Cowell's seat on the "American Idol" judges' panel.

Imagine someone offering a bacon sundae to an adorable little puppy, then telling the puppy it has to do calculus in its head first if it actually wants a sloppy ol' bite.

The puppy also has a memoir out, "Chords of Strength," and that's why he's doing the rounds. The book? It's either genuine or motivational, or a look at the most boring human being on the planet, depending on who you ask.

P.S. About that video with the cats -- don't watch it. You'll weep for weeks, at the oddest times, even if you don't like cats. Ask me how I know.

Quick hits: Heidi Montag, Sean Hayes, Elton John -- psychics, sexuality, death threats and 'Idol'

Quick hits

For a Friday afternoon, here's some quick-hit celeb news -- click the links for the full stories.

Heidi Montag, the girl we hardly recognize since all those surgeries, got good news this week: She's been cast in her first feature film comedy, with Adam Sandler, and starts filming Monday. Might she have gotten the news sooner if she'd brought on psychic Aiden Chase to replace hubby Spencer Pratt as her manager before Wednesday? Someone should ask Gene Kelly.

Sean Hayes, of "Will and Grace" fame, is gay. This is news, you say? Technically, yes. Oh yeah, he's opening on Broadway soon with Kristen Chenoweth in "Promises, Promises" too.

Nigel Lythgoe is an Elton John fan -- the producer says he'd love to have Elton replace Simon Cowell on the "American Idol" judges panel. Neal Horsley, however, is not so much of a fan ...

Madonna, Elton John, Quentin Tarantino and more hit Soho House for a star-packed pre-Oscar party in WeHo

Madonna And they call this a soft open?

Soho House held a preview party Thursday night in West Hollywood, receiving an embarrassment of bold names at its newest venue. The members-only club, which has outposts already in London and New York, partnered with Grey Goose to open its doors to Madonna, Elton John, Quentin Tarantino, Natalie PortmanHarvey Weinstein, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Kellan Lutz, Rachel Zoe, Josh Hartnett, and Clive Owen.

If only the Academy Awards could bring out better celebs (insert appropriately ironic sound effect here).

The stars gathered in the penthouse of the exclusive Sunset Boulevard property to celebrate Sunday's big show and raise awareness for RADD, aka "the entertainment industry's voice for road safety." The select, wall-to-wall crowd snacked on steak tartare and Champagne in the redesigned space that the club had rented for a week of sneak-peek Oscars parties in 2008.

Maggie Gyllenhaal chatted on the balcony with Topher Grace, while a newly single Ryan Phillippe bobbed and weaved through a crowd that also included Joaquin Phoenix, James CameronEmile Hirsch, Ben Silverman, Rosanna ArquetteMatt Dillon and Guy Oseary

Madge, clad in a silver top and black fur-lined coat, hit it off with "Star Trek" and "Heroes" star Zachary Quinto. The two were so chummy they carried their lovefest from the balcony to a table inside.

Lily Allen lands dream job: designing a fully stocked bar for Elton John

Lily allen booze Rare is the girl who gets it all, but Lily Allen may have achieved personal nirvana last night across the pond. The songstress got to design a musical bar, packed to the gills in premium vodka, at Grey Goose's Character & Cocktails gala hosted by Elton John.

Allen is open about her affinity for booze (thus, we're open about our love of Lily Allen), so who better to recruit for such a top shelf project?

Lily's creation consisted of four travel cases (just like the ones she uses on the road), that serve as full standing Goose bar, coffee table loaded with media such as a record player, and two lush hunter benches.

The installation, titled "Lil Box of Tracks," fetched $160,000 in an auction benefiting Sir Elton's AIDS charity.

Check out a shot of the bar, and more pics of attendees such as Kevin Spacey, Elizabeth Hurley and Kelly Rowland after the jump!

Elton John sings for BFF Andy Roddick's kids charity

The Ministry loves it when strange celebrity bedfellows come together to support each other's pet projects.

Thus our delight in star tennis player Andy Roddick asking his pal Elton John to swing through Austin, Texas, for the fourth annual gala thrown by Roddick for his eponymous children's foundation.

Sir Elton very generously offered a lucky bidder the chance to pick his set list for the evening. Winning numbers included "Tiny Dancer" and "Crocodile Rock." (Predictable but probably a lot more entertaining than this so-called shockfest).

The Grey Goose-sponsored bash counted guests such as Brooklyn Decker (Roddick's insanely hot wife, who's also a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model) as well as crooner John Legend and his gal Chrissy Teigen.

"Andy was the first to stand up for ovations after Elton's songs," a party-goer tells us, "and the last person to sit down."

Roddick and Decker were lucky enough to have the British import serenade them at their April nuptials in the same town.

Tickets to the event started at $750, with tables fetching a minimum of $7,500, snatched up by local athletes and social types. Proceeds were given to Roddick's foundation, which strives to serve "children who are neglected, abused, at risk or with catastrophic illnesses."
