Oscars: Chaplin legacy toasted by granddaughters, nominees

Charlie Chaplin's granddaughters welcome Jessica Chastain to an exclusive dinner

Forty years after Charlie Chaplin received an honorary Oscar for his contributions to cinema, some modern-day luminaries and his glamorous granddaughters gathered to toast the silent film star.

Dolores and Carmen Chaplin jetted in from Paris to host an exclusive Chateau Marmont dinner party with Harvey Weinstein. Jessica Chastain, Kate Bosworth, Jared Leto, Busy Philipps, Chelsea Handler and Juliette Binoche were among invitees.

In the transformed library off the main lobby (the Chateau has been quite amendable to decor changes this awards season, by the by), heavy velvet drapes shielded the affair from passersby as Weinstein chatted up the likes of Rose McGowan, his "The Artist" actress Missi Pyle and "The Descendants" director Alexander Payne.

Chelsea Handler cuddles wth Kate BosworthHarvey asked Payne to come and say a few words as a representative for all modern filmmakers. No pressure.

"The miracle of Charlie Chaplin is the miracle of cinema," Payne said, pointing out that when the world took notice of Chaplin's work it transcended nation, class and race.

Carmen shared an anecdote about Chaplin coming back to the States from exile in 1972, when he was given only a 10-day visa to come claim his statuette. His family was outraged, but Chaplin had his own interpretation.

" 'Good, they're still scared of me,' " Carmen said, recalling her grandfather's reaction.

After dinner, courtesy Jaeger-LeCoultre, funny lady Handler lingered with Chateau owner Andre Balazs (we think it's safe to say they're back on), and Bosworth caught up with a squeaky-clean Leto, who left behind his usual avant-garde duds for a black suit and slick ponytail.

Philipps wowed in black Dolce & Gabanna, but we were more interested in her dress for Sunday — as she'll be Michelle Williams' plus one. She tells us she's got her red-carpet look lined up.

And what about her unpredictable effect on Michelle's Oscar chances?

"I'm glad she won the Golden Globe," Busy said. "That took all the pressure off."

Rosie O'Donnell talks fear of little people with Chelsea Handler

Rosie O'Donnell has a little problem with little people, it seems -- a little problem that could blow up big and bad for the talk-show host and Chelsea Handler, who was a guest recently on "The Rosie Show."

Sharing bluntly and awkwardly with Handler, O'Donnell admitted "a mild fear or anxiety around little people" that she blamed on her "Nana," whom she said "was afraid of the 'Wizard of Oz' munchkins."

After getting it straight that Handler hadn't slept with a little person, especially because, as Chelsea put it, "No, that would be child abuse," O'Donnell explained her own problem further.

"What the problem is for me is ... I can't put the two things together. This is an adult person, but it's a little person, but they have adult ... it's so hard for me."

The women discussed little people with terms often reserved for abandoned and unwanted animals, then Rosie brought up the topic of how a little-person couple can have a normal-size child without the mother dying during childbirth. This after Handler essentially said that some of her best friends are little people.

"I was taken back," Amy Rolloff, one of the stars of TLC's "Little People, Big World," told the "Today" show on Thursday. "I was sad really to hear that from someone." (The series, off the air since 2010, is back for four specials starting Sunday.)

"If you're going to have a little person," Handler said, referring to Chuy Bravo, who works on her show, "I want that shape [that he has], you know, that corpulence, and the boomp-boom ... it's just the sweetest, it's like having a kid. 'Cause who else was going to give that guy a job ... "

"There's not a lot of job opportunities for those kind of people," said the host of "Chelsea Lately." "They need help."

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher: Divorce means even more rumors

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher in 2010

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are a couple no more, two months after Ashton's sixth-anniversary gift to Demi of a scandal around his alleged infidelity with a San Diego party receptionist while she was off working in New York City. Her belated gift to him was, of course, her decision Thursday to get a divorce.

After his-and-hers statements Thursday, speculation -- some of it humorous -- has filled the information vacuum. Prepare yourself for some gossipy gossip, which we hope you'll keep in the proper perspective.

Who gets Bruce Willis? What will @mrskutcher's new Twitter handle be? Will this drama, like the life of Charlie Sheen, be incorporated into Ashton's "Two and a Half Men" character's story line? (Whoops, too late on that last one, as Kutcher's Walden Schmidt has already been suffering the pain of a divorce from a wife who told him he was emotionally immature.)

Then there's the open-marriage buzz. "Everyone in Hollywood knows about their arrangement," an unnamed "insider" told the Star tabloid, "but they've managed to keep it a secret from the general public."

Chelsea Handler, who said she doesn't know them "personally very well," opined to a shocked, simply shocked Piers Morgan on his CNN show that "I think they probably had a lot of good times with some other women... Clearly they had a lot of threesomes, that led to twosomes without Demi and that leads to a divorce." After watching tape of the couple on a previous "Piers Morgan Tonight," she added, "I absolutely feel for her."

One such twosome was allegedly with Sara Leal, who went public with her claim that they'd had unprotected sex twice, that Ashton was not "weird or perverted," and that they'd talked about astrological signs and politics afterward.

Leal said he'd told her he was "separated," and she believed him.

And still bubbling in the background -- as opposed to bubbling in the hot tub allegedly shared pre-coitally by Kutcher, Leal and another young lady, all of them naked --  is a slightly lower-profile scandal from 2010, involving a woman named Brittney Jones who claimed she and Ashton had done the nasty while Demi was out of town.

"Ashton told me that both he and Demi had an 'open relationship' and that he was not in fact cheating,"  Jones told TMZ on Friday, adding that even though divorce is a bummer, she felt somewhat vindicated.

Jones' veracity became suspect when she released a sex tape late last year, using Kutcher's name to market it (though not claiming he was in it). He threatened to sue her, and then Ashton and Demi launched a charm offensive on Twitter and elsewhere, declaring their marriage to be rock solid.

After the Leal revelation, the couple pretty much kept their mouths shut, up until Thursday. Except for his pro-Joe Paterno tweet. Oops.

Now, with all that muck having been raked, it seems divorce might actually bring a bit of good news for Demi, who some have worried looks scary thin these days. Turns out women and men alike tend to gain weight "in a period of marital change," according to our friends at Booster Shots.

So bring on the comfort food, soon-to-be-ex-Mrs. Kutcher. It's what happens next.

Chelsea Handler, boyfriend Andre Balazs call it quits

Chelsea Handler and Jennifer Aniston

Wanna know what's happening with Chelsea Handler lately? She's single.

The "Chelsea Lately" host and comic has reportedly parted ways with her hotelier boyfriend Andre Balazs after about seven months of dating.

"She's fine," a source told Page Six. "If she's feeling down, she's certainly not showing it."

The New York Post column said the pair were last together at Halloween, dressed as mock royalty for a party at New York's Standard hotel.

If that source is correct in assuming Handler is "fine" dealing with her breakup, at least she's got her girlfriends. On Monday, longtime pal Jennifer Aniston helped honor Chelsea with an award from Glamour magazine.

Handler has been previously linked to rapper 50 Cent ("very casually"), "Animal Planet" host Dave Salmoni and NBC exec Ted Harbert. Balazs previously romanced actress Uma Thurman.

Is Chelsea Handler having an identity crisis?

Chelsea Handler discusses the conflicts in her career in a new interview Is Chelsea Handler having an identity crisis? Seems the comic blond, at the height of her popularity and industry demand, has given a candid interview that mocks the brand she's worked years to build.

"I want to do something that's going to utilize my brain a little more than this show," Handler told the Hollywood Reporter of her late night E! comedy series "Chelsea Lately."

"If 'Lately' is the show that I'm going to do, it's going to change. But it may turn out that I'm done with it altogether. I can't keep doing the same thing; my brain is bleeding. I want to do something that's more mindful and isn't celebrity-centered," she continued.

"Lately" is a comic roundtable lampooning celebrities and their follies, followed by a one-on-one chat with a bold-face name guest. Though it has gained steadily in popularity over the past years, and spawned a behind-the-scenes reality show "After Lately," Handler can't get no satisfaction.

"I'm not looking to totally bail on E!," she says of her home network. "They've done a lot for me, and I like it here ... if you take away the Kardashians."

While the Kardashian sisters (who have appeared as guests on her program) don't satiate Handler, she has  several projects in the pipe to distract from the brain bleeding: an NBC sitcom based on her book, "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," on which she'll have a recurring role. Not to mention her supporting bit in Reese Witherspoon's upcoming film "This Means War."

So is Handler having an identity crisis, raging against a brand she's carved out and can't move past? Or simply burning the middle-brow bridge behind her as she ascends to new levels of content-making in Hollywood?

Tell us in comments.

Chelsea Handler says she had an abortion at 16, slams teen pregnancy shows

Chelsea Handler talks her abortion and 'Teen Mom' Outspoken comic Chelsea Handler is opening up about her abortion at 16 -- and taking aim at reality shows that star pregnant teens.

Handler got the profile treatment in the New York Times recently, where she touched on her repeated attempts at a mainstream career. Chelsea decides she's too obnoxious to be a "media darling" like Tina Fey.

"People are too P.C.... We need to be focusing on other things. We’re seeking out such grossness in human behavior ... ‘16 and Pregnant.’ Getting rewarded for being pregnant when you’re a teenager? Are you serious?"

"I had an abortion when I was 16," she continued. "Because that’s what I should have done. Otherwise I would now have a 20-year-old kid. Anyway, those are things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about."

Handler also touches on her relationship with hotelier Andre Balazs. The Times writer pressed her about her public disclosure of relationships with TV honcho Ted Harbert and rapper 50 Cent. Will she be as open about Balazs?

"I won't be doing that with Andre," she said. "Obviously, you can’t avoid that entirely, because I’m not a liar and I’m not going to lie about anything, really. But, yeah, I won’t be discussing our personal life -- before, during or after our relationship.”

Ted Williams leaves rehab after less than two weeks

Ted Williams leaves rehab Ted Williams, the homeless man whose "golden voice" made him an instant celebrity, has reportedly left a rehab facility in Texas less than two weeks after checking in.

Williams left Origins Recovery Center in South Padre Island and headed for the airport, TMZ said Monday, adding that Williams' girlfriend is in rehab in Costa Mesa. No details were given about where Williams was headed. On the way to rehab, with a physician as a chaperone, he'd swung through Ohio to visit with his grandchildren.

"Ted was given the chance to voluntarily enter a drug rehabilitation facility in order to help him in dealing with his dependency on drugs and alcohol," Dr. Phil McGraw said in a statement. "In that it is voluntary, the decision to remain in treatment is Ted's to make."

McGraw hooked Williams up with Origins after the Ohio man went from homeless to Hollywood in a matter of days. A reporter's roadside video of Williams went viral, earning him the spotlight, a family reunion and a few job offers. The fairy tale took a turn for the worse when Williams and one of his daughters got into a fight that wound up with both of them at the police department, chilling out. No charges were filed, and Williams headed to rehab shortly after taping episodes of "Dr. Phil."

Williams entered Origins on Jan. 13, TMZ said; his expenses -- reportedly $49,000 for three months -- were covered, though the deep pockets were not Dr. Phil's. His departure apparently was against doctor's orders.

"We certainly hope that he continues his commitment to sobriety, and we will continue to help and support him in any way that we can," McGraw said Monday, according to CNN.

Talk show host Chelsea Handler wrote Tuesday that she was "not surprised."

Reese Witherspoon Reese Witherspoon, what is this madness? You don't approve of your own sunny blond image?

Stopping by "Chelsea Lately" to talk about her latest flick, "How Do You Know," the actress admitted she's not really a fan of any of her photos.

If not you, Reese, then what hope is there for the rest of us?

Ryan Phillippe's ex has also gone beyond the couch with host Handler: The two costar in the recently wrapped 2011 romantic comedy "This Means War," with the delicious Tom Hardy and Chris Pine.

Sightings: Jennifer Aniston celebrates Thanksgiving in Cabo

Aniston Sometimes you gotta be thankful for a getway with the girls.

No one is more seasoned a pro than Jennifer Aniston when it comes to quality time with the ladies, and the actress did just that over Thanksgiving.

Aniston hit her longtime favorite escape, Los Cabos, Mexico, with a gaggle of pals including E!'s Chelsea Handler, according to several reports. Aniston celebrated her 41st birthday in the sunny locale this year and has previously enjoyed New Year's jaunts with pals such as Courteney Cox and Tobey Maguire's wife, Jennifer Meyer

Showing off her bikini body, Aniston was snapped lounging with Handler jacuzzi-side in a private villa.

Back in Los Angeles, Motely Crue member Nikki Sixx volunteered at an early Turkey Day dinner in Hollywood. The rocker dishes out hot meals for members of Covenant House, a group that provides food, shelter and crisis care to homeless youth.

YouTube star Keenan Cahill syncs up with Chelsea Handler

Keenan Cahill, the 15-year-old YouTube lip-sync star, stopped by "Chelsea Lately" on Monday to hit on host Chelsea Handler, premiere a taped duet with 50 Cent and get a performance-enhancing gift from the folks on the show.

(Get your minds out of the gutter, people -- they gave the kid a Flipcam, for Pete's sake, so he can record his videos wherever he wants, instead of being anchored to his Macbook in his bedroom.)

Keenan, who's from Chicago and has been at this for a couple of years, has a rare metabolic disorder known as Maroteaux-Lamy Syndrome.

If you haven't swung by his YouTube channel already, and haven't hit "play" yet on the interview above or lip-syncs below, envision a blend of the best parts of hip-hop, Jonathan Lipnicki and the e-Trade baby commercials. Oh yeah, with a dash of Justin Bieber too.
