Beyonce and Jay-Z share adorable photos of Blue Ivy Carter

Beyonce and Blue Ivy
Beyonce and Jay-Z surprised fans Friday with a sneak peek at baby daughter Blue Ivy Carter. The five photos include a glowing Beyonce holding her 1-month-old girl and beaming dad Jay-Z cradling Blue in his arms.

But the biggest surprise was the way the couple chose to reveal their daughter to the world: Tumblr. Some experts thought that Beyonce and Jay-Z would make millions off the baby photos just like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, who took home $4 million for pictures of Shiloh. Instead, it appears they decided to post the photos for free.

In harmony with their decision to share Blue Ivy with the world on their own terms, this handwritten note appears on the site, “We welcome you to share in our joy. Thank you for respecting our privacy during this Beautiful time in our lives. The Carter Family.”

Blue Ivy's aunt Solange Knowles couldn't wait to share the pictures with her friends on Twitter, posting, "THE PROUDEST AUNT IN THE WORLD....OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRL IN THE WORLD! #HelloBlue :)))"

Blue Ivy, the brand? Beyonce, Jay-Z move to trademark her name

Beyonce, mother of Blue Ivy Carter

Blue Ivy -- Beyonce and Jay-Z's baby daughter's name was uniquely identifiable almost instantly, and her business-savvy parents are moving quickly to make sure she owns it.

Like, owns it with a trademark.

Blue Ivy Carter's parents filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Jan. 26 protecting the little girl's name for possible use on a future line of baby goods, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Why the rush? There was no time to waste, it seems: Two Blue Ivy wanna-be entrepreneurs have already seen their applications swatted down, according to the Post, whose patent expert noted that no matter how many White House visits Bey and Jay had enjoyed, they'd still have to go through the office's first-come, first-served procedure like the rest of us.

However, a surge in applications is usual when a new name or phrase explodes into the lexicon, and because it's the office's job to sort things out, they try to anticipate trends and then fast-track applications inspired by names in the news, a trademark policy administrator told the Post.

Still, one Blue Ivy earned the ol' TM before Beyonce was even preggers: The Blue Ivy clothing store in Wisconsin got unknowingly lucky in early 2011.

Here's hoping they had no plans to one day launch a line of baby togs.

'Twilight' actor Jackson Rathbone and girlfriend expecting a baby

Jackson Rathbone of 'Twilight' is going to be a dad.

"Twilight" actor Jackson Rathbone and his girlfriend have a baby on the way.

The 27-year-old actor and girlfriend Sheila Hafsadi, 24, will be having the baby over the summer and "are thrilled and excited to be expecting their first child," their rep told People. Hafsadi, a burlesque dancer, is said to be five months along, according to Us Weekly.

The Singapore-born actor met Hafsadi while touring with his band 100 Monkeys.

Rathbone shot to stardom for his role as pathokinetic vampire Jasper Hale in the Kristen Stewart-Robert Pattinson juggernaut "Twilight" films. So being a dad won't be his only responsibility this year, with the release of the final film "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2" in November and roles in upcoming flicks "Zombie Hamlet" and "Cowgirls N' Angels" also on his to-do list.

Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey have a new baby boy

Robert Downey Jr. and wife Susan have welcomed a baby boy, Exton Elias Downey.

Exton clocked in at 7:24 a.m. Tuesday in Los Angeles, weighing 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measuring 20 inches long, according to various reports.

The "Iron Man" star had joked with Jay Leno in December that the pregnancy had "been tougher on me” than on his wife. "Just the hormones and the moods stuff and the nausea, and the whole thing." This was the same interview where he blurted out that they were expecting a boy.

Though this is a first child for Robert and Susan, little Exton already has a big brother: Indio Downey, 18, the "Sherlock Holmes" actor's son from his marriage to Deborah Falconer. The actor married Susan, a producer, in August 2005.

Downey will be seen this May in "The Avengers" and next year in "Iron Man 3." Talk about a cool dad.

Thoughts on the name?

Neil Patrick Harris signs 'more,' 'done' -- but not 'dirty diaper'

Neil Patrick Harris talked babies and love on "The Talk" on Monday, and watching him re-create baby sign language could be one of the cutest things ever.

"Fatherhood's hilarious," he said, especially now that brother and sister Gideon and Harper, his twins with partner David Burtka, have turned 1 and are a bit more communicative.

They know some sign language -- how to say "more," for example, and "I'm done" -- but there's one situation in which no sign is necessary: "Daddy, I have a dirty diaper."

"I don't know that you need a sign for that," Harris explained, deadpan. "You pretty much know right away. That reveals itself."

NPH explained a recent semi-scandalous quote in Out magazine in which he said some days he's madly in love with Burtka, and other days he questions whether their relationship will work out and is meant to be.

He didn't want to make it sound like their relationship was perfect every minute of every day, he said. Eight years into what he called a healthy relationship, "you need to be constantly redefining what that means  ... with that comes moments when you're not so in love with each other. I think that's pretty normal.

"But we're in a super awesome place right now; he's a great dad and a great guy."

Bryce Dallas Howard, Seth Gabel have 'Baby B'; grandpa is jazzed

Bryce Dallas Howard has had her second baby with Seth Gabel.

Bryce Dallas Howard has had her second child, and Ron Howard is sending out the tweets like the excited grandpa that he is and getting the Hollywood love in return.

Howard tweeted that "Bryce and Baby B are spectacular."  Then, costar Octavia Spencer -- recent Golden Globe winner for "The Help" -- tweeted: "@RealRonHoward: Beatrice Jean Howard-Gabel Born Jan 19 2012 8lbs 6oz Congrats Ron from bryce's help family! :-)"

Baby B's dad is Seth Gabel, of "Fringe" and "United States of Tara."

From M. Night Shyamalan: "@RealRonHoward Hey Ron, tell Bryce congratulations from our whole family. I'll be waiting to cast Beatrice in a few years!"

Dallas Howard played the snobby, villainous Hilly Holbrook in "The Help" as well as a voracious vampire in "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse." Her current role, though, is new mother.

Dallas Howard was deeply affected by postpartum depression following the 2007 birth of Theo, her son with Gabel. The actress was very frank about her struggle, which she wrote about on Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP blog: "I felt I was failing at breast-feeding. My house was a mess. I believed I was a terrible dog owner. I was certain I was an awful actress. ... I definitely felt I was a rotten mother -- not a bad one, a rotten one."

Mothers, new and old, can sympathize. Here's hoping the second time around is smoother for Bryce.

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler: A baby on board that bikini bod

Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler are expecting a baby

Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears quarterback and Kristin Cavallari's on and off and on beau, broke his thumb in November and the Bears saw their playoff hopes go up in smoke. Who cares! Cutler is going to be a father!

Cavallari, the reality TV star with the great bikini body, is having a little bitty -- or possibly very big  -- baby.  (Dad is 6-foot-3, 233 pounds.)

The couple became engaged in April. Then they became disengaged in July. Then, they became re-engaged in November.

That's right around the time that Cutler suffered that very unfortunate boo-boo in a game against the San Diego Chargers -- which the Bears won in spite of Cutler's fourth-quarter injury.  Cutler was sidelined for weeks following the injury.

They also got back together just about a month after Cavallari was eliminated after a three-week stint on "Dancing With the Stars."  As The Times reported, many fans of the dance competition were not happy that she'd been booted. Neither was Cavallari.

"It's clearly not a dance competition," she told Us Weekly at the time.

Suddenly, they both had a lot of extra time on their hands, and mutual comfort was clearly in order.

Consequently, a wedding is pending, and Cavallari will be looking for those jeans with the big stretchy panel in front. She made the baby announcement to People, saying she and Cutler were "thrilled." No word on the due date.

Camille Grammer totally OK with Kelsey and Kayte expecting twins?

Camille Grammer

After Kelsey went public Sunday at the Golden Globe Awards about the twins he's expecting with new wife Kayte Walsh, Camille on Tuesday dropped a little note: "We are happy for him and his wife."

In response to an outraged fan who said she didn't have to be that way after he'd cheated on her, she wrote, "Agreed. But there is no need to hold on to any negativity."

Later, she tweeted, "I have known for a couple of months. It wasn't much of a surprise."

Not every day one of the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" is connected to a calm lack of drama, eh?

The claim that she's known for a while contradicts a report out Monday saying she learned about the babies from the media on Sunday.

Kelsey Grammer, the star of Starz's "Boss," won a Golden Globe on Sunday for actor in a TV series. Backstage, he told reporters, "Right now I'm really happy gearing up for the second season. And my wife and I are expecting so there's a lot on our plate." He described Kayte as "one of the most loving, amazing, warm human beings I've ever met."

Camille Grammer told the Huffington Post last week that "It's so unfortunate that he still talks about private matters. It's hurtful to me and its disrespectful to our children. He's not thinking of the kids when he's doing stuff like that."

Walsh and Kelsey Grammer got engaged in December 2010. Camille filed for divorce on July 1, 2010, shortly before stories surfaced about Kelsey's new flight attendant girlfriend. News that Walsh was pregnant with Kelsey's child went public in August 2010; in October they announced that she'd miscarried.

Kelsey Grammer is already a father of four; two of them, his 10- and 7-year-old kids with Camille, are still the subjects of a complicated custody battle.

The Grammers' divorce was final last February, about two weeks before Kelsey and Kayte got married on a Broadway stage.

Thoughts about Camille Grammer apparently taking the high road?

Beyonce's baby Blue Ivy Carter gets a song from her daddy Jay-Z

Beyonce and Jay-Z have a baby girl, Blue Ivy Carter

Blue Ivy Carter, Beyonce and Jay-Z's much-anticipated baby girl, arrived over the weekend and is already making major headlines.

Monday morning saw the release of "Glory," a tribute track from Jay wherein he reveals an excessively adorable amount of excitement over his firstborn -- and that Beyonce suffered a miscarriage before Blue was conceived.

"Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you'd disappear but naw / Baby, you magic," Jay says on the track. The musician born Shawn Carter also mentions "false alarms and false starts / all made better by the sound of your heart."

Now that Blue is here, all is well -- and delivered naturally, despite rumors of a C-section. A small sample of her crying appears on "Glory," which we totally qualify as her musical debut. So we should get used to her name, one that's generated much social media commentary and analysis.

The color blue is heavily associated with Jay's career -- from his trademark blue fitted Yankee cap to his earlier series of smash records, "The Blueprint." Ivy, suggests the New York Daily News, is taken from "IV," the Roman numeral representing the number 4. Bey and Jay have long been obsessed with the number, as both were born on the 4th and got married on that date. Beyoncé's latest solo LP, her fourth, was titled "4." We think you're getting the picture.

Now, in grand tradition for this chart-topping pair, the good news is always sprinkled with a bit of drama.

One other new parent alleged that access to his child was limited because of the security surrounding Blue and her visitors. "People don't need to be treated like this when dealing with sick children," the angry father told a New York CBS affiliate. He alleged that a hallway giving access to the neonatal intensive care unit, which is reserved for care of premature babies, had been closed to accommodate the star party.

Lenox Hill is denying this.

"No security plan that we or the Carters' security team put in place would have prevented or delayed families from gaining access ... and to date, no families have complained to the hospital about being denied access to the NICU," the hospital said in a statement.

Then there's the case of Beyonce's former Destiny's Child bandmate Michelle Williams, who decided to deliver her congratulations in a form other than Twitter. And that didn't go over well.

After badgering messages from fans who demanded she praise Bey and Blue, Williams struck back by explaining her warm wishes would be made in person.

"I do NOT have to say congrats to someone when they're NOT on twitter...ESPECIALLY when I talk or email them all the time....or when I'll be physically present as well...so [sic] harrassing and stalking my timeline to see if I've mentioned something is POINTLESS!!! My friendship with people aren't always for twitter display," Williams wrote.

Beyonce has a baby girl! She and Jay-Z welcome Blue Ivy Carter

Beyonce and Jay-Z have a baby girl

Beyonce and Jay-Z welcomed their first baby Saturday night in New York City, giving their daughter the name Blue Ivy Carter.

New auntie Solange Knowles and famous friends Rihanna, Diddy, Russell Simmons and Gwyneth Paltrow were among those tweeting their best wishes, with Rihanna dubbing the little girl "princess Carter" and Paltrow writing, "Welcome to the world Blue! We love you already."

"The most beautiful girl in the world," Solange said on Twitter, adding later that "Information that goes through the telephone, always gets delivered wrong," likely a reference to early reports that the baby's name was Ivy Blue, rather than Blue Ivy.

Kourtney Kardashian and Snooki also got in on the party, with the latter dubbing Queen B a "sexpot" who deserved congrats for her "baby gurl," and the former invoking -- no lie -- Britney Spears.

Jay-Z (real name Shawn Carter) and Beyonce had reportedly arranged a private wing in Lenox Hill Hospital for the birth, which according to E! News sources was via scheduled C-section. She revealed the pregnancy in August onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Congrats to the new mom and dad, and readers -- what do you think of the name?
