Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

'Inception's' Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

This post has been corrected. Please see the note below for details.

"The Dark Knight Rises" — or what might be called "Inception" lite — has found itself a boardwoman and a cop in Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The actors who previously teamed with "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan are joining him again for the newest Batman film — the final chapter in the trilogy.

Cotillard, who won the lead actress Oscar in 2007 for "La Vie en Rose," will play Miranda Tate, a member of the Wayne Enterprises board. Tate is "eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham," according to Variety.

Gordon-Levitt will join Gotham City's rank-and-file police force as John Blake, "a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon." He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2009 for his starring role in "(500) Days of Summer."

Jane Lynch, Ellen DeGeneres and more sign letter to Obama to kick off same-sex marriage campaign

Jane Lynch and Lara Embry sign same-sex marriage letter to Obama This post has been updated. See the note below for details.

Celebs and VIPs including Jane Lynch, Anne Hathaway and Ellen DeGeneres kicked off the "Say I Do" campaign Monday with a letter to President Obama asking him for clarity on the topic of same-sex marriage and urging him to support an end to "exclusion from marriage."

The campaign will continue until Obama expresses his support, according to Freedom to Marry, the group behind the effort.

Other signers from the entertainment ranks include actors Eric McCormack, Martin Sheen, Lily Tomlin, Jane Wagner and Portia DeGeneres, musicians Melissa Etheridge, Mya and Rufus Wainwright, playwright Tony Kushner, and studio honchos Bob Wright, with wife Susan, and David Geffen, The Times has learned exclusively.

Tech VIPs signing their names along with those of civil rights leaders and other activists include Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, Chris Hughes of Facebook, Sean Parker of Napster and Mark Pincus of Zynga, along with athletes Brendon Ayanbadejo and Scott Fujita of the NFL.

"My wife and I were married in May of 2010, and I can say without a doubt that marriage matters," Lynch said in connection with the letter, which will be delivered to the White House by same-sex couples and families this spring.

"As President Obama continues his journey toward recognizing our right to equal taxation, protection and dignity under the law, I encourage him to listen to gay and lesbian couples and families so he can better understand how marriage equality affects us all."

Tony Kushner signs same-sex marriage letter to Obama Lynch and Lara Embry got hitched in Massachusetts, one of five states -- plus the District of Columbia -- where same-sex couples can marry. Ellen DeGeneres married Portia de Rossi locally in 2008, during the window when same-sex marriage was legal in California. De Rossi has since changed her name to Portia DeGeneres.

Kushner and editor-writer Mark Harris, another signatory, had a commitment ceremony in New York in 2003 and planned to be wed in California in 2008, but ultimately tied the knot that year in Massachusetts. Tomlin is not married to Wagner, her partner since 1971, but said in February that although it's not her thing, "I certainly want anybody in the gay community to marry if they wish to."

"In law, in love, in life, marriage says 'we are family' in a way that nothing else does," the letter reads. "Marriage is the coming together of two lives, marked by a public promise of love and responsibility in front of friends and family. And marriage brings not only public respect and personal significance, but also a safety net of legal protections, rights, and responsibilities for which there is no substitute."

Portia and Ellen DeGeneres sign same-sex marriage letter to Obama A Pew Research Institute poll released the first week of March shows, among those expressing an opinion, about equal numbers for and against same-sex marriage, a significant change from 2-to-1 opposition a decade ago. In the West and Northeast, a majority of people give it the thumbs-up, the poll said.

In addition to the letter, the "Say I Do" campaign will spotlight stories of same-sex couples and their family members across a variety of media, organizers said.

Updated at 10:40 a.m., March 14: This post originally neglected to mention the District of Columbia as a spot in the U.S. where same-sex marriage is licensed. Thanks to commenter @Fabrisse for the reminder.

2011 Vanity Fair Oscar party: Impossible glamour (and a taste of In-N-Out Burger)

Natalie Portman at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar party

With a giant photo of actor James Dean looming over the entrance to Los Angeles' Sunset Tower Hotel, Vanity Fair welcomed an army of stars to its 2011 Academy Awards post-party.

Notoriously exclusive and always glamorous, the annual event did not disappoint as big winners including Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Melissa Leo and director Tom Hooper came with trophies in hand to greet Editor in Chief Graydon Carter.

Colin Firth and Anne Hathaway at the Vanity Fair party
Portman was naturally the belle of the ball, hand-in-hand with fiance Benjamin Millipied as countless people congratulated her on her awards-season sweep.

Jude Law palled around with Cameron Diaz and "Contagion" costar Gwyneth Paltrow while Gabrielle Union chatted with Jamie Foxx -- who then ran into his friend Jessica Biel. Biel and Foxx  went off together to circulate while Justin Timberlake stood with Andrew Garfield and his girlfriend.

Gorgeous women weren't in short supply, including newly single Scarlett Johansson, who was engaged in deep conversation with Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter. Though this was Portman's year, few could quite contain themselves when nominee Michelle Williams floated by.

In stunning Chanel haute couture, Williams had a soft glow that stopped conversations and, frankly, assured us she'll make a convincing Marilyn Monroe in the forthcoming "My Week With Marilyn."

Colin Firth at the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar partyLet us not forget Williams' humble roots, however: She looked right at home speaking with former "Dawson's Creek" costar Busy Phillips

Star couples -- including Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, designer Tom Ford and Richard Buckley, Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth, Jon Hamm and Jennifer Westfeldt, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts, and Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann -- put up unified fronts.

But no couple was so convincing as Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, the picture of young Hollywood come to the grown-ups' table, running back and forth between the Tower bar and terrace holding hands (yes, they were). Taylor Swift made an appearance in a gold mini, snacking from a cone full of In-N-Out Burger fries that was getting passed around. Meanwhile, her former flames Jake Gyllenhaal and Joe Jonas worked the crowd.

It's a good year to be a television star, being that many small-screen favorites were invited to film's big night: Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" and "Glee" folks including Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Matthew Morrison made the scene.

Fellow gleek Dianna Agron showed up, looking nowhere near as traumatized as some since-debunked reports would have her after her split with actor Alex Pettyfer

Anne Hathaway and her many Oscar dresses [Poll]

Anne Hathaway Oscar dresses

Anne Hathaway was a woman of 1,000  dresses at the 83rd Academy Awards on Sunday, starting on the red carpet in a 2002 Valentino creation and ending at the Governors Ball and Vanity Fair Oscar party in burgundy Atelier Versace.

Hathaway was styled by Rachel Zoe for the show in multiple gowns and one Lanvin tuxedo. For the after-parties, she accessorized with a clutch purse and boyfriend Adam Shulman. And OK, maybe it wasn't exactly 1,000  gowns, but it was definitely more than most women show off in a given night.

Which look did you like best? The poll answers (look way down there) go with the pics above and below, listed in left-to-right order and color-coded for those who aren't so good at "spot the designer."

Oscars: Anne Hathaway in Valentino, with Valentino

Anne Hathaway and Valentino at the Oscars Anne Hathaway may have been onstage at the Academy Awards with James Franco, but she hit the red carpet Sunday with designer Valentino -- and wearing Valentino.

Hathaway's relationship with Valentino is nothing new. When the designer received his Rodeo Drive Walk of Style award in 2009, the actress was the presenter.

He also had a "leetle cah-may-oh" appearance in her hit film "The Devil Wears Prada," which depicted a Valentino runway show (see the video, below).

James Franco gets Oscars hosting advice from Judd Apatow

James Franco gets Oscar hosting advice from Judd Apatow For James Franco's upcoming Oscar hosting gig, ponder the elite hosts before him who could offer sage advice: the likes of Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Whoopi Goldberg and Alec Baldwin.

But no. Franco instead has turned to former collaborator Judd Apatow for some helpful tips, as the funnyman and prolific producer just took a turn at hosting the Producers Guild Awards.

Engaging in a hilarious, adults-only Skype chat (see it here if you're an adult with a sense of humor), Judd suggests that James should follow the traditional method of writing jokes about the content of the year's nominated films -- you know, like oral sex. Apatow references this major, ahem, trend in flicks such as "Blue Valentine" and "Black Swan."

That should definitely be a hit with the loose, hip, prestigious academy. Franco then asks Apatow to send him all the hit jokes from his own hosting duties to be repurposed on the Oscars telecast.

"If something works just a little bit," Apatow says, "we can give it to Anne Hathaway."

Giuliana Rancic suggests Chris Colfer, Anne Hathaway do lunch

Chris Colfer at the SAG Awards The Ministry is not shy about its love of a ladies lunch, and apparently neither is E! anchor Giuliana Rancic -- so much so that on Sunday she recommended a little nosh and bonding for "Glee" star Chris Colfer and Anne Hathaway, who will be stopping by the show to guest star as the lesbian aunt of Colfer's Kurt Hummel.

Giuliana Rancic at the SAG Awards "Are you guys going to set up maybe a lunch date or text each other about the script?" Rancic suggested to the Golden Globe-winning actor on the red carpet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Though Colfer said he'd be "all for it," either bonding over Cobb salad or sending emoticons her way, he said he'd rather pick her brain about her upcoming role as Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises."

We won't hold our breath for a linen-napkins-and-Arnold-Palmers moment. Watch the complete interview here.

Anne Hathaway is Catwoman for 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Anne Hathaway will play Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises" The good news won't stop coming for Anne Hathaway: The fumbling princess turned A-lister has just been cast as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight Rises."

Catwoman / Selina Kyle has been played in her previous big-screen incarnations by Michelle Pfeiffer and, in a disastrous, Razzie-winning turn, Halle Berry.

(And then there was that whole embarrassing sitch in 1991 when Sean Young tried to snag the role through blunt-force self-promotion. She did not succeed.)

Hathaway reportedly beat out Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley for the gig, opposite Christian Bale and a previously announced Tom Hardy.

Hathaway will host the 2011 Academy Awards with James Franco. For more on Hathaway's "The Dark Knight Rises" feline frenzy, check out Hero Complex.

Golden Globes: Serious glamour from Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Renner at InStyle bash

Anne Hathaway and Zac Braff at the InStyle Golden Globes party

Natalie Portman at the InStyle Golden Globes party Golden Globes parties can look like fun, but when it came to fashion at Sunday night's InStyle and Warner Bros. party, no one was playing around.

Anne Hathaway made a stunning show in her amber Armani number, leaning back in a private booth so casually you'd think she was in jeans. The upcoming Academy Awards host lounged amid the likes of "Inception" director Christopher Nolan, Malin Akerman, "Desperate Housewives" diva Vanessa Williams and Molly Sims.

Pregnant ladies Natalie Portman and Jane Krakowski crossed paths, both chatting with InStyle magazine editor Ariel Foxman before heading to their respective studio parties. "Black Swan" beauty Mila Kunis floated in and immediately hit the bar -- for java.

The brunet sipped from a coffee cup for the better part of an hour, deep in conversation with "The Town" star Jeremy Renner.

We spotted Lea Michele of "Glee" with her costar Amber Riley -- and can only hope the multi-talented Michele said hello to "True Grit" star Hailee Steinfeld, as they have something of a history.

Steinfeld looked adequately starstruck but took age-appropriate texting breaks at the event, which boasted a serious Godiva chocolate bar. It also boasted Tilda Swinton, very fashion forward in Jil Sander, chatting up W magazine editor Lynn Hirschberg.

Christina Aguilera had a coming out of sorts -- she's been quietly dating "Burlesque" production assistant Matt Rutler, but the pair made their official debut last night, holding hands and kissing for photographers.

Anne Hathaway surprises New York's P.S. 22 chorus with Oscars invite

The "Glee" chorus might have had Academy Award-winner Gwyneth Paltrow to sing about during the holiday season, but thanks to Anne Hathaway, the talented chorus of New York's P.S. 22 will be getting nothing less than an actual Academy Awards appearance in the new year.

Oscars producer Bruce Cohen on Thursday brought recently announced host Hathaway to the 2010 Winter Concert at Staten Island's largest public elementary school, where the fifth-graders were invited to Los Angeles starting Feb. 25 for a weekend of star treatment leading up to the Feb. 27 telecast.

Not only will the kids peek in on rehearsals and hit up the red carpet pre-shows, Cohen said, they'll get to perform on the big night.

Hysteria ensues in the clip above. Hathaway will host this year's show with actor James Franco.

P.S. 22 has been an online phenomenon for some time: The children's chorus often covers contemporary songs, and major talent just drops by, frequently, to catch their numbers.
