Earthquake in Haiti: Celebrities and fans respond on Twitter [Updated]

Wyclef Celebrities and their fans are responding with prayers, news and calls for aid after Haiti was hit earlier today by a powerful earthquake, and many serious aftershocks, centered 10 miles offshore and near the capital city of Port-au-Prince. There's a lot of damage, and many casualties are expected -- click here for a photo gallery that's growing as more pictures come in.

Wyclef Jean, whose uncle is the Haitian ambassador to the U.S., was speaking to a person in Haiti when the quake hit. He told CNN, "We're gonna need immediate aid, and we're gonna need the United States and the international community to react immediately. This is the worst devastation that we as Haitian people have faced." His Twitter feed has unique updates. [He sent a detailed statement to @GlobalGrind around 8 p.m.]

Alyssa Milano, a power retweeter, has been urging her Twitter audience to donate to the Red Cross (with an assist from Christina Applegate) and is providing updates on the situation as the news unfolds.

MC Hammer has shared the news with his 1.8 million followers. Rainn Wilson sent prayers.

Various tweeple and bloggers in the gossip and "Twilight" fan communities (@ThinkingofRob is on fire with updates) are urging donations to the Canadian Red Cross and elsewhere.

[Updated at 7:10 p.m.: The list of names grows -- add Marlee Matlin (who goes out of her way, with an assist, to tweet support to the Haitians in French and Dutch), Olivia Wilde (a relative newbie on Twitter, she's soliciting donations for Artists for Peace and Justice, and her tweets are especially passionate because she just visited Haiti), Omar Epps, LL Cool J, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez and Russell Simmons.]

[Updated at 7:30 p.m.: Encouraging donations to UNICEF -- Nicole Richie, Benji Madden, Joel Madden and Demi Moore.]

[Updated at 8 p.m.: "Big Bang Theory's" Kunal Nayyar asked how to help, and a few hours later Wil Wheaton was recommending the answers Kunal got; Ryan Seacrest offers pics (delete the stray commas after the links to see them); Marlon Wayans follows @Wyclef's lead. Later updates will be after the break.]

Given the massive nature of Twitter, this is clearly only a partial list ...

Equal time for Alyssa Milano: A very tan argument against 'Jersey Shore'

Milano Alyssa Milano does not love the show "Jersey Shore." Annd as you might have noticed, the Ministry's Leslie Gornstein has sort of swayed in favor of the show "Jersey Shore." But the Brooklyn-born, Staten Island-raised actress is not alone in wishing the show were off the air.

Well, this is a little uncomfortable. What to do?

How about equal time?

Yes! (Leslie is off for a few days, shh, so don't tell her, OK?) The Ministry of Gossip is proud to present Alyssa's heavy-on-the-tan-and-tease-and-tatas visual argument against the MTV series! (A video that is getting tons of Internet love, incidentally.)

About her decision to do a parody, Milano told Yahoo News: "We wanted to make something funny and smart, but also, a video that didn't take itself too seriously. I'm a big fan of the Dove: Evolution campaign. ... But who am I kidding? I jump at any opportunity for the world to see me with frizzy hair and without makeup. Happy Holidays, Internet!"

Full disclosure ...

Brittany Murphy and the USO: an exclusive appreciation [PICTURES]

USO-tour-2004-brittany-murphy-on-stage Actress Brittany Murphy's funeral is today, Christmas Eve -- a "strictly private" service reportedly to be held at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in the Hollywood Hills.

With that in mind, and in the spirit of the holiday as well, we'd like to celebrate Brittany's life a bit, with exclusive photos from her 2003 and 2004 USO tours that show the "sweet soul, with a lot of talent and heart"  described by Alyssa Milano  on Sunday on Twitter.

Alyssa's Twitter followers saw a couple of Twitpics of her and Murphy hanging out on the carrier Nimitz -- and through the magic of the interwebs (with an assist from Twitter user Dustin P. Jones), the Ministry has more, courtesy of Les Martines, the original photographer.

Alyssa and Les were both eager that the images reach Brittany's fans.

The shots of Alyssa and Brittany "were taken aboard the USS Nimitz about 100 miles out to sea on a USO tour in 2003," Martines said.

Please click on the "photo gallery" image of Brittany and country singer Neal McCoy, to the left, if you'd like to see the pictures and let them speak for themselves. Otherwise, read on -- we're going to go long with a few quotes after the jump, because the sentiments are uniformly heartfelt.

Martines is road manager for Neal McCoy, who was on those tours too, along with USO stalwart  Newton (he's performed during every conflict since the Vietnam War), Air Force and USO veteran Paul Rodriguez, and of course the lovely ladies. McCoy is about to set out on his 14th USO tour come January.
