'Hugo': Martin Scorsese clocks in with a younger good fella
Based on Brian Selznick's award-winning novel "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," the film stars Asa Butterfield as Hugo and Chloe Moretz as Isabelle. The young actors joined Scorsese and wife Helen Morris on the red carpet Monday, as did cast members including Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Emily Mortimer and Frances de la Tour.
The story is set in 1930s Paris, and those visuals are one of the movie's strengths, The Times' Kenneth Turan said in his "Hugo" review. Though this is Scorsese's first foray into 3-D, "If everything moves along and there's no major catastrophe, we're headed toward holograms," the director told 24 Frames earlier this month.
Also spotted on the red carpet: "Boardwalk Empire" star Steve Buscemi with wife Jo Anders, Vera Farmiga, Tony Bennett, Julie Taymor, Spike Lee, Patricia Clarkson and screenwriter-director Paul Haggis,
"Hugo" opens Wednesday.
