Maria Shriver has filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, honoring a time-tested celebrity tradition of doing the deed on a Friday leading into a holiday weekend.

Documents signed by Shriver on June 18 and filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court show her seeking joint custody of their two minor sons, 17-year-old Patrick and 13-year-old Christopher. The date of separation in the 25-year marriage was noted as ‘to be determined.’

In this case, the checkmark on the ‘irreconcilable differences’ brings to mind Schwarzenegger’s May revelation — prompted by questions from the Los Angeles Times — that he’d fathered a child with longtime housekeeper Mildred Baena. Baena’s 20 years of employment with the family had ended in January. The boy is now 13.

Shriver’s divorce filing was first reported by TMZ, which noted that the two have no prenup in place. Sources told the website that the two are on speaking terms and that Shriver didn’t surprise Schwarzenegger by filing.
