Amber Portwood hospitalized; ‘Teen Mom’ had threatened suicide

Amber Portwood of ‘Teen Mom’ fame has been hospitalized for observation after threatening suicide Tuesday, according to police in her Indiana hometown.

Police went to a home in Anderson, Ind., after a caller said the 21-year-old was depressed and threatening to end her own life, Anderson Police Det. Mitch Carroll said Wednesday in a statement. She did not appear to be injured, he said; Portwood’s attorney had no immediate comment.

Portwood was given probation last week after pleading guilty to two felony domestic battery charges stemming from a September ‘Teen Mom’ episode that showed her slapping, choking and kicking baby daddy and ex-fiance Gary Shirley, now 25, in the presence her daughter.

Portwood was arrested on three felony counts in late December, spending 24 hours in jail before making bail. She’d made almost bigger news in early December, however, for getting a massive, criminally unattractive abdominal tattoo of her daughter’s likeness.

In exchange for the guilty pleas, prosecutors dropped a felony child neglect charge, and Portwood was ordered to undergo 30 days of inpatient therapy, earn her high school diploma and put $10,000 in a college fund for her daughter Leah, now 2.

Shirley made the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, in which he said she’d told him she was going to hang herself, and that he should call police and tell them they’d find her body in the garage.

‘Our thoughts are with her and we hope to hear more soon,’ MTV said in a statement. Portwood first appeared on the network’s ’16 and Pregnant,’ from which ‘Teen Mom’ spun off.

‘American Idol’ winner Fantasia Barrino attempted suicide last August after having a series of legal problems stemming from to her relationship with Antwuan Cook. At the time, the singer and single mom was in production on her VH1 reality show, ‘Fantasia for Real.’
