Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

'Inception's' Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt cast in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

This post has been corrected. Please see the note below for details.

"The Dark Knight Rises" — or what might be called "Inception" lite — has found itself a boardwoman and a cop in Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The actors who previously teamed with "Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan are joining him again for the newest Batman film — the final chapter in the trilogy.

Cotillard, who won the lead actress Oscar in 2007 for "La Vie en Rose," will play Miranda Tate, a member of the Wayne Enterprises board. Tate is "eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father's philanthropic endeavors for Gotham," according to Variety.

Gordon-Levitt will join Gotham City's rank-and-file police force as John Blake, "a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon." He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2009 for his starring role in "(500) Days of Summer."

The film, which stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, has also cast Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Tom Hardy as the brutish villain Bane and Juno Temple as streetwise Gotham girl Holly Robinson. Hardy also worked with Nolan on "Inception," as did Michael Caine, who is back as Bruce's butler, Alfred. And if you count Hathaway being superimposed into "Inception" in the Academy Awards' opening montage, it's safe to say that this next film will be a bit of an "Inception" reunion.

Also reprising their roles in the series are Gary Oldman as Commissioner Jim Gordon, Morgan Freeman as business manager/gadget wiz Lucius Fox and Nestor Carbonell as Gotham Mayor Anthony Garcia.

"The Dark Knight Rises" is set for release July 20, 2012.

For the record, 7 p.m. April 19, 2011: This post originally said actress Juno Temple worked on "Inception." She did not. Thanks to commenter @blane for the catch.

Juno Temple was NOT part of Inception. Ellen Page was.

I am so ~eh about this. Inception was a good film, but no where near the level that I was expecting. And it sure is beginning to seem like Inception-lite. I think maybe C. Nolan is going off the beaten path on this, and not in a positive way, the way he did in the first two films. I guess we'll have to see, but Marion Cotillard and J. Gordon-Levitt are not the most exciting performers.

That's your opinion. I personally think Joseph and Marion are brilliant and exciting actors. And 'Inception' was a great film -- a movie that actually provided character development and a plot with no holes ...unlike most films these days.

Awesome :)

Like.

I thought JGL had been cast as Alberto Falcone? Or was that unofficial?

Have any of you noticed how much Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come to resemble Heath Ledger?
I always thought if Nolan wanted to somehow keep the Joker character alive, Gordon-Levitt could actually pull it off.

I love this bit of news. This is just making me want to see it more.

Any new development is a risk, but the new characters are always a treat, I believe a congratulations is in order to the 3rd rock character, I am willing to see it and hold any concerns at bay, but its all good.

i havent seen j. gordon-levitt played in a movie since 10 things i hate about you, lets see how he does in the new batman movie. i hope that he doesnt mess it up for the batman fans out there including me. the dark knight with heath ledger was really good and he played the crazier side of the joker.

i cant believe that they put anne hathaway as catwoman i mean she always played either a serious part or the gentile plarts in movies so this will be something to see her in movie that she plays a villain. i think that she will do just fantastic with this role
