Mel Gibson plea expected — for the kids' sake [Poll]

Mel Gibson is expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence This post has been corrected. See the note below for details.

Good news for those who wondered if the Mel Gibson-Oksana Grigorieva drama would ever come to an end: The actor is expected to plead guilty or no contest this week to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge that would slap him with counseling but no jail time, L.A. Now said Wednesday.

Why now? For the sake of his kids, his attorney Blair Berk said in a statement, and to slam the brakes on the "enormous media circus" that would continue to surround the situation. Gibson has been under investigation for months on allegations of domestic violence involving a Jan. 6 altercation in which Grigorieva alleged he hit her while she was holding their child.

"Mel's priority throughout all of this has been that the best interests of his young daughter Lucia and the rest of his children be put first in any decisions made," Berk said. "It is with only that in mind that he asked me to approach the district attorney with a proposal that would bring all of this to an immediate end."

Much dirty laundry has already been aired, including the explosive tapes of a ranting Gibson that went public in July as well as revealing e-mails and text messages that later shed light on secret negotiations that failed to keep the tapes under wraps. More of the same was likely to have come out in a prolonged court battle, which Gibson apparently decided against fighting.

More than one story line must come to an end, of course — an extortion investigation is ongoing, though Radar Online cited a source Wednesday evening as saying the case against Grigorieva would be rejected for insufficient evidence. That announcement could come Friday, the source said, the same day Gibson is expected to enter his plea.

If those two loose ends were tied up, custody of Lucia would be the last action item on the couple's messy-breakup agenda.

For the record, 9:20 a.m. March 10: This post and its headline originally said Gibson would plead guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence. However, additional sources told L.A. Now later on Wednesday that the plea could be "no contest," which in criminal court has the same effect as a guilty plea.

He is a sick psychopath and an abuser but the courts always favour men which is sad. That's why he's getting off easy and why women who are in such violent situations should never rely on the courts for support and handle it themselves.

No jail time? That is so wrong!!!

Hmmm...I have the perfect solution.

Stick Mel, Charlie Sheen and Lindsey Lohan in a single cell with no windows, no furniture (except for a single toilet) and keep them there together for nine months...

I'm glad he's getting mandatory counseling. It's what his victim wanted and he really needs it. Maybe this time it will take and we won't see another terrible eruption like this from him again.

He is pleading "no contest", not "guilty".

He is above the law. What a shame. What does this tell his order kids...its ok to abuse a women...I'll get you out of jail. :(

It is wrong to charge Mel Gibson who admittedly open handed slapped Oksana Grigorieva when she was running, waving the baby wildly in the air and continued once she re-entered the house. I think Mel Gibson has been victimized by a woman who stalked him, and extorted him. However Mel is not without fault, he fell for this grifter and has suffered for it ever since and should have used the head on his shoulders to separate fact from fantasy.

For those of you jumping up and down wanting to hang Mel Gibson, have you looked into the fact that both of California's Domestic Violence Against Women groups have emphatically rejected OG's attempt to join their ranks because her story smelled like last week's fish? Or do you just want to see Mel Gibson castrated for some unknown reason except to yourselves?

Once again there is one justice system for the rich and famous, and another one for the rest of us. In no way does the punishment fit the crime. Mel Gibson should be serving jail time for assault and battery and uttering threats. The justice system has failed miserably for women and is stating that assaulting women and threatening to kill them is only a minor misdemeanor. It's no wonder that men believe that they can continue to assault women without major repercussions and women are afraid to report being assaulted.
