Christina Aguilera kills the national anthem -- and not in a good way [video]

This post has been corrected. See the note at the bottom for details.

Christina Aguilera's fumbling of the national anthem before the 2011 Super Bowl may have been worse than Nick Collins' pick-six off the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger -- unless, of course, you're a Green Bay Packers fan.

Check out Xtina's "interpretation" of "The Star-Spangled Banner" above, and vote in the Lea Michele vs. Christina Aguilera singing poll. And remember, the blond diva has been getting the tune right for a long time, including at a hockey game when she was 11 (she starts around the 1-minute mark):

More recently, she got the lyrics right for Game 7 of the 2010 NBA Finals (see the proof below). So -- maybe this girl just isn't a football fan?

For the record, 5:59 p.m.: This post originally gave Ben Roethlisberger's first name as Brett. Of course, it is not Brett, just like Clay Matthews' first name is not Chris. Brett Favre's first name is Brett, however. Thanks to commenter @Eaglesfan19 for flagging my gaffe, and making me laugh at myself, albeit in a banging-my-head-on-the-wall way.

She was probably nervous, people make mistakes. She has a good voice, could do without all of the screaming at the end though...

Killed it!? More like destroyed it. It was sad. The errors were really really really noticeable. And Christina putting her own spin on it was distracting. It's a good song about a moment in our nation's history not a pop song. If a performer wants to do their own version save it for a concert or an album, not a sporting event where it should reflect a shared history. Oh well...

I wish that for once the National Anthem would be sung as written with music and without all of the improvisation. I also think it'd be neat if everyone in attendance sung the song. However, I know that would never happen as long as the chosen singer input their flair such that no one could follow along.

It was shameful. Especially with all the military personnel in attendance, including a Congressional Medal of Honor awardee.

Killed it ---more like MASSACRED the national anthem to shreds--that you can not even discern the original soul, lyrics and melody that Francis Scott Key purposed it to be...truly pathetic!

As long as these over-rated divas focus their performance on themselves and NOT the meaning of the songs they are singing--these disastrous performances will always happen again and again!

Here is the PERFECT US National Anthem rendition by Glee artist Charice--

I'm certain that singing in front of so many people must be terrifying, especially a song as difficult to pull off as our anthem. I thought it was just fine.

Unrelated, I'm surprised to read so many racist statements about C.A. here.

Re: Johnny, read the comment, I said she should have her citizenship revoked (doesn't matter whether she was born is USA, my comment is meant to point out her lousy performance, undeserving of the honor of performing it, blah, blah). Don't be so literal.

Further, if she was born in the USA she ought to know the lyrics.

Christina Aguilera can sing and just because she repeated a line doesn't mean anything. Hell, she is known for singing the anthem but I guess she got a bit nervous. By the way, I don't even know the entire words to the anthem. Her vocals are wonderful, the crowd didn't cheer when she hit that high note for nothing.

Maybe it's a statement somehow. I think having the entire US population groped at the airports is a directed statement with the intentionality of a nuclear missile. Maybe this was too?

MY GOD how does Christina Aguilera still have a show biz career?! She kicks off the new year with the awful, insufferable movie BURLESQUE and then stinks up the great state of Texas with the worst national anthem performance since Rosanne Barr butchered the song at a San Diego Padres game 20 years ago.

Christina screams, screeches, shouts, warbles, and trills incoherently before crashing the 7-octave sound barrier and screwing up the lyrics.

Memo to Christina: you are NOT Maria Callas or even Mariah Carey, so please stop making noise like a rabid cat caught in a 16-wheeler's tail pipe!

I wouldn't trade one Katy Perry for one hundred Christina Aguileras

She flubbed a word or two. But she's a great singer. Is a blues interpretation really so bad? No, in fact, it's quite strong. The people who didn't like it have VERY staid notions of what "The Star-Spangled Banner" is supposed to be. Lighten up, will ya'?

P.S. Like Fergie sang, "You're so 2000-Late!"

An appalling performance. How bad is it when a professional recording artist cannot even get the words to her own nation's national anthem correct? It pretty much reflects the sad state of our Republic these days...

So let me get this straight..all you bozos who claim to know the Star Spangled Banner backwards and forwards can sing it 100% of the time without ever making one mistake? She knows she lyrics. She's done it correctly before. It's a tricky song because it was originally written purely as a poem, not as a song, and so the rhythm of the lyrics has an odd flow. I was a soldier and sometimes have trouble remembering the right order of the lyrics. If singers sometimes flub songs they wrote themselves, of course singers will sometimes flub songs written by others. People make mistakes!

Lot's of people muff that song in front of a stadium crowd. My beef is with the
extreme over-emoting, and over stylizing, which makes all her songs indistinguishable. Time to learn a new trick, Christina.

Ms Aguilera is an embarassment to the USA. Thousands of US Miltary men and women stood at attention in Afghanistan and Iraq, only to be embarrased by that dumbell. Aguilera is either too arrogant or too stupid to handle singing the Anthem. She's lousy. Get a country singer or someone from a sports stadium who can SING it, not worble it.

The Anthem is a horribly written almost impossible song to be rendered successfully, which has been the downfall of many able singers. Only its historical value keeps it as our national anthem; certainly not its literary or musical value. Even with the controversial "God shed his grace on thee" phrase, "American the Beautiful" would be a more appropriate and beautiful anthem. As a music lover, i cringe each time I hear the Anthem sung at some local event by a local singer.

Wanna bet that 75% of the people in the stands heard nothing wrong? ie do not know the words

I just read that Aguilera not only killed the anthem, but that she kills a few every night—drinks, that is. Rumor is that she's a drunk, and won't get help. Maybe she was cocked during the song.

And maybe every previous comment says the same things, but I haven't read them. I like to be narcissistic and just post without seeing if everyone else beat me to it, or reading what others say!

Nobody's perfect, but not very many of the planet's 6 some odd billion people get paid gobs of money to sing it right, either. I'm sure I could of got it right for free, which I would have just for the chance of showing respect and love for my country. No forgiveness from me, Christina.

I heard that she was using legitimate lyrics: the original manuscript wasn't preserved and there are at least two versions. I could have done without the arrangement, though. Why does every singer feel they have to personalize it?

The problem I have with these celebs is that the anthem is spose to be about US, not them. Who in the heck can sing along with these egomaniacs when they take one syllable and turn it into a hearing test; or butcher the lyrics.

They need to go back to bands playing the national anthem and the crowds singing it. I'm tired of people butchering it and "embelishing" it. The anthem belongs to the people!

I enjoyed it a lot, even though she did fumble a line. I found it to be powerful and inspiring.

And for those saying she should sing it the way it was meant to be sung...which of you was alive in the early 1800s when it was written? Yeah...
