Chris Brown can legally speak with Rihanna again, as long as he doesn’t harass or annoy her, now that the court order keeping him 50 yards from her has been downgraded from ‘stay away’ to ‘do not annoy.’

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Patricia Schnegg on Tuesday made changes to the five-year protective order that had been put in place after Brown pleaded guilty in 2009 to felony assault on Rihanna. In January, after Brown completed a 52-week domestic-violence education program, attorney Mark Geragos asked the court to consider loosening the restrictions.

Rihanna had no objections to the change, her attorney said Tuesday. Though no objections were known Jan. 29 either, Rihanna’s attorney was not present and, ‘in an abundance of caution,’ Schnegg said she wanted to double-check before loosening the order.

Brown attended the brief hearing Tuesday; Rihanna did not -- opposite of what happened recently at the 2011 Grammy Awards, which he skipped and where she performed. Both were nominated for awards.
