John Dye: 'Touched by an Angel' star dead at 47

John Dye of Touched by an Angel dead at 47

John Dye, costar of the long-running TV series "Touched by an Angel," was found dead Monday in his San Francisco home, a medical examiner's spokesman said Thursday.

Though the cause of death wasn't official, relatives said the actor died of heart failure.

"I like the role because death isn't something we talk about much in America," Dye wrote in a 1997 compilation of "Touched by an Angel" scripts. "As a nation, we find it difficult to mourn or grieve, labeling tears a sign of weakness. Because of that, Andrew is a rather loud character, helping us face something we would rather ignore."

"Dear, sweet John Dye, rest in peace," costar Valerie Bertinelli said Tuesday on Twitter.

Dye joined Roma Downey and Della Reese on "Touched" -- in which heavenly messengers helped people get through tough patches in life -- as a sort of angel of death, though his role evolved. He was on the CBS series from its second season in 1995 until it ended in 2003.

"He turned the idea of the angel of death into something that was compassionate and welcoming," his younger brother, Jerre Dye, told Tennessee's Commercial Appeal.

Dye also appeared in the spinoff "Promised Land" and had regular roles in the prime-time TV series "Hotel Malibu," "Jack's Place" and "Tour of Duty."

A memorial service is planned for Jan. 22 at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church,in Amory, Miss., Dye's hometown.

I live in Utah and was fortunate to work as an extra for 9 years on and off of on this wonderful show. When it ended it was such a bad loss feeling. John Dye was always a gentlemen, a truly nice guy and was always honored to work on this show. You will be missed John Dye. Sorry you had to go so young and will still be watching the reruns.

Even though we know God as all knowing, all powerful it doesn't take away the human nature of sadness to loss someone we grew to love. I loved John Dye's character in 'Touched by an Angel'. Watching the show helped me through so many tough times in my life. One thing that occurred when one of my daughter became grown we enjoyed watching it together as part of our daily activity when it was coming on the Hallmark channel. My grandson, my daughter son would be with us and we would be tickled when the theme song came on it did not matter if he was in my arms or hers he would sit up from being rocked to sleep just to move to the melody. We did not understand how that was the only song he did that to,but it was. I told her it was love.

dear john i may not know you personally ony by andrew may you rest in peace and hope some day we can see each other in heaven i will miss you andrew angel of death sincerly yours debbie riskus

to the dye family your son was a great man he will allways be my angel i will miss him he is in jesus arms god bless and your in my thoughts and prayers love debbie riskus

john dye may your soul rest in perfect peace in the lord.i hope that at the time of your calling home an angel of death was also at your side to lead you perfectly home to the lord.i love u so much and your gentle way of acting your role to inform us about death,at 47 you are till young.but then we thank the lord for your life.amen.

I used to watch the show "Touched by an Angel" just for the fun of it. In addition, I will always remember, for as long as I shall live, the character of "Andrew," the "Angle of Death" for whom John Dye has excellently portrayed. Moreover, I remember that one "fall of 1999" episode where some spatially crazy guy, who really claimed to be religious, and who claimed to totally answer to the all mighty god of our known universe, has not only set himself on fire, because of his sins, but has also set the entire church on fire. Furthermore, I remember when the character "Andrew," "The Angle Of Death" took that totally crazy man right on home to heaven. However, that man had to go to hell and back to heaven. Later on, I remember when the character "Andrew" called angel "Monica Wings" another angle, who could not sing, dance, or play any instrument worth any global, and/or spatial damb, called angel Monica Wings up on stage to sing "My Favorite Things," from the "Sound Of Music." Finally, angle Monica Wings was only able to sing with her very, very bad head cold and/or sinus infection. Finally, and however, Monica Wings, the yearning angle sang "My Favorite Things" in the following manner:

"Rain drops on roses, and wiskers on kittens."
"Bright copper kettles, and warm, wollen mittens."
"Silver white winters that melt into srpings."
"These are a few of my favorite things."

But, acturally, the correct version of "My Favorite things" goes like this:

"Rain drops on roses, and wiskers on kittens."
"Bright copper kettles and warm wollen mittens."
"Brown paper packages tied up with strings."
"These are a few of my favorite things."

"Cream colored ponies, and crisp apple strudels."
"Door bells and slaigh bells, and snitsal with noodles."
"Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings."
"These are a few of my favorite things."

"When the dog bites, when the bee stings,"
"When I'm feeling sad,"
"I simply remember my favorite things,"
"and then I don't feel so bad."

Sincerely,
Karen L. Hunt

I loved that show and he was great. So sorry that he had to leave so soon. I pray for his family and friends.

I have seen every Touched by an Angel, it is my favorite show. I will always watch the reruns. I use to say I hope the Angel of Death is just like Andrew. Rest in peace John I will be seeing you. Love to all

I will miss John. Thank you Father, you gave John the perfect role as Andrew I am no longer scared to die because I know you will send someone like that to meet me and take me home.

I only just found this when looking up something on Della Reese. I'm so sorry for his family & friends, it's sad when they are taken from us too early. I won't get into my beliefs or his role on the show, I'll just say that there must be more and it's only a sad thing for those left behind because we will miss them so much. I hope you will find the strength to get through this and I hope knowing how much he meant to so many people who didn't even know him is a comfort of sorts. Take care of yourselves.

John, you brought us so much joy here on earth. Now heaven is celebrating your return. God will take care of you and your family

Sorry to see that John Dye of the TV Series "Touched By An Angel" has died. That TV Series was so very inspirational to ALL of us who are Christians ! I am certain that the Lord has welcomed Mr. Dye into the Gates of Heaven to be with Father God forever ! God Bless all the people who played roles on that TV Series ! Each one of you brought so much to each and every viewer who loves God ! Thanks to all of you !

John was good at his job. He made death funny and real to me. On "Touched by an angel" as Andrew he took my heart. From the first episode to the last I had a crush on him. I am sorry to hear about his death. I wonder if Andrew took my sister, Dana to heaven when she died in the year of 2006. She had a brain tumor. I will miss both of them a lot. I will keep watching the show whenever it comes on. He is in my prayers and thoughts. I hope everything goes well for the Dyes. They had a special boy in their famlily. He will be missed by those here in Sterling Colorado. I pray for the Dyes and wish them well.
