Howard Stern contract comes on anniversary of last Artie Lange appearance [poll]

Artie Lange The new Howard Stern contract was big news Thursday, and also a reminder that the Sirius XM radio show doesn't happen in a vacuum. As fans on sites such as Save Baby Gorilla are pointing out, it's also been one year since sidekick Artie Lange last appeared on Stern's radio show.

A few days after that Dec. 9, 2009, show, fans would learn that Sirius management had asked the comic to "take some time off" -- then on Jan. 3, he attemped suicide by stabbing himself, but was found by his mother in time for doctors to save his life. At the time, Stern squashed rumors that Artie had quit the show.

Lange, who has struggled over the years with substance abuse, returned to the New York stand-up comedy stage in September. (Coincidentally, it was the same weekend comic Greg Giraldo was hospitalized in New Jersey for an overdose of prescription medication. Giraldo died days later.) Lange, who currently has no show dates on his calendar, recently put his Toms River, N.J., home up for sale for $3.5 million, according to the Wall Street Journal

Whether Artie returns to the Stern show is uncertain, but the new contract definitely means there's a bigger window of opportunity. Thoughts?

I miss Artie every single day.

The show has not been the same since he left.

Stern show or not, I just want my baby gorilla working again :(

This is the ONLY reason I'm keeping my Sirius/XM. I think at some point Artie can come back

The show has been awful. Howard & Robin are completely out of touch with mainstream America. Howard needs Artie. The show needs Artie.

The show really really really needs Artie back.

There is a HUGE void without him.

Even if they can't get him back, something in the show must change in the future. This final year of the contract without Artie, and just with Howard and Robin alone has really been lacking. I'm a huge fan, but it was the least enjoyable, least entertaining, least engaging year of the show I've ever heard.

Artie is very missed. If he feels mentally, emotionally and comedically well enough to try and return, I think Howard and Sirius should at least let him try.

I also think the new show should start later in the day. I think for the sanity and happiness of all the cast members, this starting a show at 6am !!! AM should end. Start the show at 8am.

The show needs Artie back, if he's up for it.

Bring back Craig Gass!

Arty me boy! You've got to work somewhere, why not where you will do the most good?

I miss Artie horribly. When he gets Howard laughing it is so contagious. You could tune into just the laughing and not know the premise and tears would be rolling down your face. It is so sad a talented guy like Artie is tortured by his past.
Bring him back when he is ready and willing.

My new SUV came with 6 months free Sirius Radio and I was so happy it ends on 12/15 so I just resigned for a year in hopes I will get to listen to Artie on the show in the near future. I have miissed the show for the last 5 years and am once again addicted if Artie comes back I will definately resign for the next 5 years

Artie...so there you are tubby, you look like a bucket of lard on a bad day you baby gorilla. Artie we miss you. The show would be on all cylinders if you came back. The show is good but it was with you it would be great. Best of luck...your the man!!!

First...

So Glad Howard Re-Signed!

As For Artie...

He's Gotta Ask Himself If He Wants Or Is ABLE To Handle The Pressure Of Being Back On The Show. The Wrong Move Could Set Him Back To Where He Was A Year Ago. As Much As We'd Like Our Baby Gorilla To Return, Do We Wanna Possibly Send Him Back To The Psych Ward? Given Artie's Record, I'm Not Sure Coming Back On A Daily Basis Is Realistic. A More Realistic Scenario Would Be Artie Being A Regular Guest Who Sits Often (i.e. Gilbert, David Arquette, George Takei, etc).

As Far As The Show Not Having The Baby Gorilla...

As Much As Artie Added To The Show, Howard Has Proven Time And Time Again That The Show Can Evolve And Survive Anyone Leaving. I Think It'd Be Cool For Howard To "Shake Things Up" And Get Some New, Fresh Blood To Fill The Chair. Anyone Agree?

All though I found Artie to be a great asset to the show, I don't think Artie can handle the success that the show brings to him. But with out the show his standup career will truly suffer. He's a great talent, but he is also a burden for the show in as he doesn't show up alot of times and has lame excuses that do give Howard some material to work with, but it's not fair to other staff members to have to treat Artie with kid glove because at times he can fly off the handle and cause uneasy feelings for the whole staff. He has a heart of gold. But has a hard time dealing with certain situations.Like I said I love Artie but I think Howard would do better replacing him

Artie was the best thing that had ever happened to Howard Stern and vice versa. Sadly Artie's ongoing need to get high combined with the monumental popularity and success brought by the show resulted in what we can all vividly remember. Artie MAY recover from this eventually but his only hope for the fullest recovery would be to keep as much stress out of his life as possible, Going back would not have that outcome. I would say give Artie that "Open Door" offer that he has for others. That aside I do not think that Sirius would want Artie back as an employee. I wish Artie nothing but the best . I want his life to be a happy one and one free from as much stress and negativism as possible

I listen to the STERN Show for Howard Stern. Artie, at best, was a distraction, and at his worst (especially in the throes of heroin addiction, when he wasn't nodding off) brought the show to a halt, by interrupting Howard and Robin during actual celeb interviews in order to crowbar in his own "war stories" (that he'd already told many times before on air) in order to make himself sound like an "insider."

Artie CHOSE not to clean himself up when Sirius told him to take time off.

Artie CHOSE a passive aggressive F'you to Stern, Sirius, and the mother and sister who'd been begging Sirius/Stern to administer some tough love by a particularly gory suicide "attempt" that just happened to coincide with Artie's mom's weekly visit to restock his refrigerator.

Especially after Howard Stern's recent comments about how he can't tolerate having self-destructive people around, there's no way Lange will ever be well enough to be welcome as a regular in that studio.

Besides, Lange's true fans should face the reality that the Stern Show has been a part of Lange's illness, whether he was using the Show as an excuse to indulge his addictions to create "material" or because it just wasn't a healthy situation for him. If they truly loved Artie Lange, they'd be praying for his recovery and accept that he probably shouldn't return to that environment.

Good luck to Artie Lange but for your own sake -- and those of us who want to hear Howard and Robin at their best -- please put your health first and stay away from what was obviously a stressful situation with which you were unprepared to deal.

God Bless Artie. A true lost soul.

Loved hearing him on Howard Stern. Hope that he'll be back some day.

People like the poster "Shamella" just don't get it.

They can type as much as they want but they will never really understand the hell that drug abusers go through.

Artie hit rock bottom, it's only up from here.

Even if he came back for just an hour a day...

IT JUST SHOWS HOW STUPID THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE THAT THEY WOULD SUPPORT AND LISTEN TO ONE OF THE MOST DISDUSTING SEMIHUMAN BEINGS ON GODS EARTH HE MAKES PEOPLE SICK EVERYTIME HE OPENS HIS SICK MOUTH AND AS I SAID IT IS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO ARE SO DUMB TO ALLOW A CREATIN LIKE THIS ON THE AIR HOW STUPID ARE WE HOWARD STERN HAS TO BE THE SICKEST PERSON WALKING

The show was been better than ever without Artie. I hope he gets well, but, really, he added nothing to the show.
