Reports: Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin has cancer

Soul singer Aretha Franklin, who underwent surgery for an unspecified illness Thursday after canceling concert dates through May, has cancer, a Detroit TV station reports.

WJBK Fox 2 in Detroit cites a family member in confirming a National Enquirer print-edition report Wednesday that specifically mentioned pancreatic cancer, the disease that claimed Patrick Swayze and Michael Landon. Franklin's rep had no comment for the Detroit News, which cited a source "familiar with the situation" in its cancer report.

"God is still in control," Franklin said in a statement after her surgery, which was deemed "highly successful."

"I had superb doctors and nurses who were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country."

Franklin has been visited several times by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who on Wednesday said she was "recovering very well" from surgery.

Famous survivors of pancreatic tumors include Apple exec Steven Jobs and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Terrible news. Very, very sad. My heart goes out to Aretha and to her family. No other artist in any field of Art has given me more entertainment and moved me more in my life. I've been blessed to have seen Aretha perform in concert 9 or 10 times. She is the Queen. No singer better on the planet. Sending her love and support.

Not good, not good.

Bless you, Aretha, we love you!

Ms. Aretha Franklin, now is the time to tell you how very much ive enjoyed your music and wonderful voice. One of our favorite songs is RESPECT. that is a good mantra to live by. You blew me away when you stepped in for a very well known opera singer and was actually singing opera. We knew you were multitalented but who knew to what extent. Bravo, Bravo. Add actress to the mix and we have only half of your talents. Good luck and wishes for a fast recovery and God bless you.

Aretha , God is in control, Your work here is not done yet, Wishing you a complete and speedy recovery. We need you to show these half naked no-talent pop tarts how it's suppose to be done. You are truly a blessing and the world appreciates the last 50 years of you God given talent.
Thank You

What to say about a ICON of her status? Except that you have brought joy, peace, and pride to a race of people that need all the heros and heroines that we can get . No matter what was going on in your life you always kept it together for your fans, black ones, white ones, just people all over this world, what a great role model you have been for women all over this world. I will always keep you in my prayers and in my heart for the giving person that you are and that I hope you continue to be. God bless you Aretha ! YOUR GREATEST FAN!!!! NEVER STOP SINGING AND MAKING PEOPLE HAPPY !

Aretha will be fine everyone. She just needs to lose that weight, rest, exercise, etc. But foremost, she needs to continue to put, keep and follow up with all of her trust in God and surround herself with believers. Aretha is the greatest singer/entertainer of all times. be positive.
