When Gwyneth Paltrow set about playing not-quite-recovered addict Kelly Canter in ‘Country Strong,’ she had some pretty A-list help in getting into character -- Robert Downey Jr.

Stopping by ‘Chelsea Lately’ to promote the flick, Paltrow confessed she couldn’t easily relate to the character’s struggle.

‘It was actually really challenging ... I didn’t understand how you could do something so crazy one night and wreck lives in your wake, then wake up and expect to be back to normal,’ she said.

She then called on her ‘Iron Man’ costar Downey for his own experiences.

‘I actually e-mailed [Robert], who has been sober for a long time. He wrote me the most amazing e-mail and helped me understand it,’ Paltrow said.
